One month and 500 powder coated boolits

It has been a month since I started powder coating boolits. Most have been .38 special at .38 special velocities. But I just shot some .357 125 grain Lee round Flat nose boolits at over 1300 FPS almost 1400 FPS with no sign of leading. If I was do do that with normally lubed boolits I would be working the rest of the week trying to get all the lead out.

Anyone have any experience in this area?

Sounds like you are doing it right. Stay with it!

If your bond is good you can go much faster with no leading. 1400 isn't near what it can take.

1400 fps isn't even close to taxing a properly coated and cured PB bullet. Try 2800 out of a 30/06, 3000+ from a 7mm, 3500+ from a 22-250, with no issues. I don't have anything with more chamber pressure or anything faster, so you guys will have to take it from there. I am getting too old to be buying more guns; well not many more anyway.

once i started and saw how good it worked i clean out all the lube from my sizer and dies.

Yes, I have an old lube sizer I probably should put up for sale while it stills has some value as I will never use it again at least not for its intended purpose.

My first reload with purchased, coated, 45-70 300gr boolits. They are correctly sized .458. After the usual sizing, expanding and seating just 5 of the boolits, I'm left with a small ring of shaved lead and coating at the last groove. I've pulled one boolit and the coating is gone....shaved off.
Soo...what is the answer? Increase the expanding?
I don't want to shoot it without lube or coating.

I'll give that a go...and I won't be crimping, as my 45-70 rifle is a single shot. The velocity I load to will be 1050 or so

I have never reloaded for 45-70 but it is a tapered case. So, I would ditto expanding a little more. Since it is a single shot I would taper crimp and not a roll crimp. You might want to check the brass thickness also.

You say purchased bullets, are you sure the coating has been properly cured?

I purchased them from a reputable supplier that I've dealt with over the years for many cast bullets.
Properly cured? I have no idea how to tell that, but I rely on the supplier to sell a quality product.

I to would assume the coating was proper. If you want to check hold a razor knife blade 90 degrees to the finish and give it a light pressure scraping. A hard finish should resist being scraped off.

Yessir, the coating passed your test. I could scrape it off, but it would need considerable force [much like cramming the bullet in a case not expanded enough]

I'm just pushing a 300gr at low velocity with Unique...the gun is a new to me CVA Scout v2 in the 45-70. I'll work the loads up to at least an "ouch'' recoil.

I have pushed PC to 2000fps in my 6.8 with decent results & no leading.

I've shot a bunch of Lee 356 124g Truncated cone (bevel base) from rifle at 1500 fps at 3 MOA or so. Also had good luck with the Lee 200 (checked) at 2300 fps in a 1/12 358 Winchester, probably around 1.5 MOA. I'm happy.

Guys he is shooting a 45-70. High speed bullets are not a thing. The most i have pushed my 45-70 is 1900 with a 405 grn bullet. That put a hurting on the shoulder after a few ! So lets keep that in mind.
