    410 single smoothbore with HBWC

picked up a cute little basque made 3.5 pound single barrel folder over the summer, some brass 2 1/2" shells, and a .395 RB mold and felt wads, but was not happy. can't find a HBWC or paradox mold, so bought some 195 gr HBWC from this source:
    https://www.mattsbullets.com/index.p...roducts_id=282
the bullets mic 4.409, and drop thru the bore freely. adding scotch tape to .413 makes them stop when dropped in but can be pushed thru with a 3/8 dowel. so the choke on this 26" gun is modified.

pistol primers and some moderate rate hercules pistol/shotgun powder i suppose. perhaps 10 grains of unique to start over a chrono. can't be slow like blue dot or 4227/2400, as no crimp, i am thinking.

any source for a HBWC or paradox mold in 410?

    what say you?

One of these from Tom at Accurate should work:

If you order you can tweak diameters.

From experiments I did a decade or so ago, a hollow base WC does not stabilize without rifling. In a smooth bore they tumble at less than 25 yards. Look at the shape and balance point of Lyman “pellet” shaped slug vs a hbwc, different animal. Try what you have before investing in a mold. Ymmv, but probably not by much.

this is a shotgun, so smoothbore. the HBWC is quite front-heavy, so i had thought it would be stable enuf to go into 3" at 25 yards. i understand that a SWC or DEWC will tumble reliably.

justashooter; Svarog makes a nice Lyman style sabot mould for the 410 available at ebay. I have one and like it. Mine mics .405 on the front band after powder coating. Gp

While they were not cast bullets, I tried some 158gr jacketed .357 bullets in my .410, and they shot very well. They were loaded into a plastic wad, and just slid through the full choke on my barrel. IIRC they did about a 6 inch group at 50yds.

i spent a lot of time messing with different combinations of moulds, wads and so forth. never did get any accuracy to speak of... but I did find a cool triball, 2 ball, and single ball loads that really rocked my break open shotguns over A2400.. very fun to shot and hold close together at 35 yards.. about 4-5 in grouping.

I'd expect slugs to pattern like a shotgun. I wouldn't waste much money trying to make a smoothbore into a slug gun.

Here are some representative 25-yard targets firing round balls vs. black powder .44-40 cowboy loads in a bead-sighted, .425" smoothbore .410 barrel with choke cut off.
