    Latest 1903 Springfield remilitarize build.

I picked up a sporterized 1919 vintage 1903 Mk1 Springfield with a 1933 bbl recently. Put it back into uniform with a nice unmarked military stock that I went over with bronze wool, restained and truoiled. Bought a Mk1 cutoff and made my own spindle out of a Marlin shotgun stock bolt. Put the correct milled parts on it. The Kerr sling is original. Here are some photos of it with it’s little brother. My first 1903 that I remilitarized with its 21 inch bbl. I used my HF mini mill to cut the grasping grooves on them. I added the numrich mag extension last week. Made it tacticool. Here’s a family portrait of my two 1903’s and a 1922M2 Springfield. Great rifles.

2-12 Picked up a brand new looking Mk1 sear today. I’ll put it in tonight and see what happens.

    Baltimoreed,

VERY NICE JOB! I began collecting military surplus arms in 1958. I saw far too many nice "as issued" guns get a Bubba "sporterization." Thanks for undoing a past wrong.

Might have another rebuild on the back burner. Been messing with a duffle cut ‘c’ stock trying to get the awful black gunk off only to find 4 patches, toe, heel and 2 small ones on the forend. Somebody put a lot of effort in saving this chunk of walnut from the fireplace. But there are no cracks and it looks pretty good otherwise. After touching up the lighter forend patches with leather dye I’ve been staining the stock with Birchwood Caseys red walnut stain. Got the leather dye suggestion from a smart guy on Gunboards. Wanted to see what I had before tackling the duffel cut part of it. Its cut short, about 1/4 inch before the bbl band step. Shouldn’t be a problem as my first rebuild only had a 21 inch bbl. Pictures when I get some more done.

Working on my duffle cut junk ‘c’ stock and have gotten the 4 patches to almost disappear. Still waiting for my donor rifle to arrive but other pieces have started showing up.

2-10 talked to the seller today but he couldn’t tell me much as his ’puter guy won’t be in till Wednesday. Duh.

2-17 talked to another guy who’s taking over the shop waiting for his FFL? He seemed to be straight and was apologetic. Claims my rifle is there with the packing stuff ready to pack up and ship? In looking on line it seems like the gunsmith is a flake with mediocre skills and poor business sense. But how hard is it to send an email for the ffl while your waiting for a mo to arrive snail mail and then carry a box to the shipper when you cash the mo? I’ll give them a bit longer. I don’t think he’s trying to scam me, he’s just a flake and he’s holding up my build.

Both of my used stocks were from fleabay. The 21 in rifle’s stock was a banged up scant and had a bunch of work done to it but the Mk1 stock was in nice shape and not damaged so I just went over it completely with bronze wool and restained it. Both were finished with truoil. The current project ugly ‘c’ stock was a gift from a bud that he didn’t have a use for.

I like the idea of a shortened 03, ala the "Bush Master".
I wouldn't mind having a repo of the cutdown M1917 rifles used in the India China Burma theatre. About the same OAL.
