I have the chance to buy 2 unopened 4# cans of 4759 for $20 a lb.
This seems like a good price but I have not had a chance to load this powder in the past.
By all accounts, it seems to be one of the best powders for cast in rifles.
What are your feeling about buying this discontinued powder?...dale

I’d buy them. IME, nothing beats 4759, either for cast boolits or for nitro priming in duplex loading. The price is very attractive.

I buy a lot of obsolete powders, just to see what they were like. I have a collection of old loading manuals, and Sharpe’s Handloading book, so the out-of-print powders are still eminently useful. Ive never had any problems, using standard load development practices and “book” loads. Sharpe kept the obsolete powder loadings in the later editions of his books because he was always finding and buying leftover powders too.

I'd buy it at that price. IMR SR 4759 a bulky powder that works well in reduced loads, maroon/plum colored can though not green, that's a different powder ends in a 6

+3 on the “heartbeat” thingy! Absolutely the best powder for cast bullets ever made IMHO, too bad it is no longer made. Before using it for lead loads, I used it for reduced loads in at least two dozen bottle neck cartridges.

I guess the consensus is that you should buy it. I've got about 10 lbs left and if I came across a good buy for it, I would snap it up.

I would never just buy a single pound of discontinued powder, but 8 pounds is enough to find some good loads, and shoot them for a while.

Grab it while you can , like before someone else gets it . If I lucked up on some , along with 4756 I'd buy all I could especially at a fair price .

I have around 20 pounds in my stash, and even at that I've started using it sparingly. Best darned powder for .30 cast shooting I've ever known. Others work well too, but 4759 is the only one to give consistently good results in everything in my experience. I would yell at Hodgdon for discontinuing it if I knew who to yell at!!

I was given 1/2 lb by a reliable handloader. I've never used before and I'm hesitant to try it lest I like it too much! Might be a consideration! Although 8 lbs would keep me in hunting boolits for the rest of my days...

Me too. I use my less than two pounds now for what I already have figured out. Hate to waste it casting about.
