works well as either
"The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men."--Plato
i have been using it for years as a cleaner and lube on all my handguns. Works very well.
I am liking ballistol more and more. I used it to clean my primer slide on my press, and it did a fantastic job on gunked up deposits, leaving it clean and slick. I have been using it on my autoloaders where it is hard to get a wet patch in. Good stuff, and not as harsh as some of the other products with more ammonia.
Due to the price of primers, warning shots will no longer be given!
If the Wehrmacht could keep MG42's running @ 1200 rounds per minute with Ballistol, then it is good enough for me!
I like Ballistol, works great for blackpowder firearms, corrosive ammo, and todays guns.

I'll buck the trend. I don't care for it. Primary reason is the horrible smell. I tried it and I didn't see anything my regular hoppes 9 and oil couldn't accomplish so I never looked back.
The best thing that can stop & neutralize the acid salts when browning a barrel!

I use it too, though not as a cleaner. It can also be used to neutralize fouling if you can’t clean your gun(s) as soon as you get home. It’s also good for leather and wood. And I like the smell too. I’ve been trying to figure out how to infuse my deodorant and toothpaste with it
As stated the smell is horrible! But it does work well. However, my nose prefers Hoppes! I confess to having a varied selection of cleaners etc. But if I could only have one it would be Balli or Ed's.
West of Beaver Dick's Ferry.
A friend of mine a top shooter at Quigley recommended it to me and it seems to work real well for Black. He swears by it and his long range groups have not suffered a bit.
I spent 25 years re-ennating Rev War my unit was a rifle company and we all used custom built rifles! Battles were all day on Saturday and then 12 to 3 pm for Public on Sunday but An early Sunday am tactical was always available!
Saturday evening we were very tired but had to clean our flintlocks because doing a quick clean and then keeping them in our tents on humid summer nights ended in surface rust everywhere! So one would have to do a major scrub...which sucked! Then we started using balistol and a bit of water to flush the barrels and wipe down all the exposed metal parts.....It was amazing in that there was no rusting over night any more!
It really neutralizes the acid salts of BP combustion ! Plus The next morning the first blank cartridge went off with out wiping the barrel! ( Only the frizzen and flint)

It does have have that unique butt crack stink but works well with black powder fouling.
A young man I am mentoring in handloading was so insistent I try Ballistol he bought me two cans for Christmas. I've used it once and frankly, I was impressed. I've been a died in the wool hot water guy for 40+ years and really don't see me changing, however, that one use was convincing.

The smell of ballistol is mostly licorice! It may annoy some but Kroil and a few other solvents have the same problem!
If it works but stinks is better then smells good but dosen't do a thing!

I use ballistic for cleaning my black powder guns. I use 25/75 ballistol:water. Spray it in, fo have a smoke, and come back and wipe off. Removes black powder fouling very well.
Ballistol "Moose Milk" works great on BP
Ballistol smells like sweaty athletic socks that have been sitting on the floor for a year.
Murph's Mix works great on BP
Murph's Mix smells very pleasant .
Guess which is my preferred BP cleaner ??
Ive used an awful lot of it. Ive used for cleaning black powder rifles mixed with water. Used that same formula in a small spray bottle to lube patches at the range. Used it uncut for smokeless guns. Ive used it to treat leather holsters. Used it for years but I still dont trust Ballistol or anything else that is water soluble for long term storage and rust prevention. There are much better products for that.
