Gun show score: Marlin 1895 guide gun

I went to a very small show this weekend. I wasn’t expecting much but I ended up with this 1895 Guide Gun (1998) with a Leupold 1-4x scope and 210 rounds of factory ammo. I shot it today and it’s great. This is one of the better deals I’ve ever gotten at a show. He was asking $650 and I probably would have paid it, but he took my offer of $600. Needless to say I was pleased.

Wow... with a scope AND a load of ammo. Good deal!

Sweet. What scope came on it?

My 1895 GS is my go to in 45/70. It’s not a beauty queen like my Turnbullized 1886 or my heirloom 45/90.

The only downside with that rifle is the barrel is too short to cross the border into Canada for a black bear hunt. Okay, and maybe additional recoil with Buffalo Bore or similar ammo.

Congrats. You did good. My first lever was a Marlin 45/70 and I was hooked on levers. Only one problem though. They tend to multiply

Hey! That one's got a recoil pad. My '95 did not until I tried some tolerable hot loads; then it sure got one!

My first lever was an 1895 but it got stolen. It was recovered but was pretty beat up so I sold it. Over the years I've wished I would have held onto it.

I would have bought that deal even if I had no use for it. Does Canada have restrictions on barrel length now that they didn’t have before? It’s been 10yrs since I’ve hunted bear in Canada. I use to go 2-3 times a year and always took two rifles. My back up rifle is a Marlin Marauder with 16” barrel. To save time at border I have registrations for the rifles I usually took into Canada. I have registration for the Maurauder.

Long guns must have 20" barrels. The diagram on the RCMP 5589 (?) form shows that measurement includes the chamber, but all the Border Officers I've met measure from the front of the receiver. They don't have a rod to insert down the barrel to the bolt face.

That certainly was a good buy.

It is in a great cartridge too. There is something about rounds that have weathered the test of time.

Does it have the ported barrel, my first year guide gun does and it kills the recoil.

Sweet score. Congratulations. A guide gun is on my list, or maybe a cowboy with 20" barrel.

Yes, it's ported. I sort of wish it wasn't because I wanted to have a 45/70 threaded for a silencer, but that just gives me an excuse to hunt for another gun
