    Stick on WW variations

I did some research on here (not for hours though). Upon separating/sorting my ww's I developed a notion that all stick on ww's are not created equal. I know obviously that some are steel, zinc, aluminum etc.. But aside from all the soft, obvious pure lead ones there is one type (painted grey) that cuts similar to a clip on. I've attached a pic. Is it possible this type has same ingredients as the clip on ww's?

Your suspicions are correct. They are not soft lead but similar to cowws.

Yes, the one on the right is about the same as clip on weights.

BNE has a sticky on XFR test that he did on both stick on weights and clip on weights.

Thank you-will check out that sticky! (Having a problem locating that "sticky")

Its at the top of this section. Lead and lead alloys. I don't know how to post a link to it.

The plastic coated stick on WW are hard, but they produce a lot of black(toxic?) smoke. Stay upwind and hope u don't have angry neighbours.

I found some in the last batch of weights I got from the dealer and some stick on weights felt like rubber.
Plenty of steel and zinc too, unlike the old days when all one had to do was melt all the weights together and skim off the clips and dross.
    I miss those days.......

If you are in a state that still allows lead wheel weights consider yourself lucky. Trying to find lead here in SE Wisconsin is like panning for gold.

Thanks for all the input fella's. I guess I can "file" those stick-on's with my clip on ww's? Think I'm gonna melt those separately and see what the hardness is before I do that.

According to BNE's test those painted stick on's are nearly the same alloy as clip on weights. I melt mine in with my other clip on weights. It will be interesting to see the results if you have yours tested.

Depending on the cost to get tested I may do so. I also noticed (after biting into thousands of clip-on's) that all CLIP-ON WW's are not created equal either. I believe the painted (gray) both stick on and clip-on are harder than the "run of the mill" naked lead clip on's! I'd like to check the composition of the 3. Thank you for link also Camper.

I agree not all wheel weights feel the same when clipped. Maybe if there was some that was special it'd be worth separating them. But they are pretty close according to the testing in the stickies.

There is a member here, BNE, that will do the test for the cost of a pound of lead per sample. He is a great guy to deal with.

I have also noticed a difference in the seemly hardness of different types of wheel weights. BNE's test results say that the alloy is pretty consistent. I wonder if the shape of the weight changes the amount of leverage that you get with the pliers or if maybe some weights are water cooled, or what.......

I don't sort out SOWW from COWW they all get melted together and foundry type added to reach the bullet weight I want with the test mold I use to make my base metal.

    You mean bullet "hardness" right?

Painted SOWW's go with the COWW's. Unpainted are soft PB.

The painted SOWW's I sent BNE tested just like COWW's. It's always best to satisfy your curiosity even though Abe Lincoln said you could believe anything you read on the internet.

Well no, I mean weight when I mix the COWW with foundry type and arrive at the weight that matches the weight of 6-2-92 alloy in the test mold the hardness is in the 15 BHN range or close enough for me.
