    223 load with BLC2

What do u all think of using H BLC2 for 55 gr or heavier gr loads for a ar15. I have varget, 322,335 alient #15 and a few others. Might have to get some h 4198 also to try. I have Hornady 55 gr fmj’s Sierra and horsndy’s 68 and 69 gr and some Sierra 75 gr and think I got some Hornady 77 gr that is supposed to load in factory mags.got two ar’s one in 1/9 twist and the other in 1/7 twist. Only got up to 300 yards at my range to shoot so what do you all think of BLC2 in the ar?

BLC2 is my go to powder for 223 jacketed. I only have bolt rifles and use 69 grain Sierra matchkings.
I can commonly get under MOA groups at 200 yards with this combination. On a calm day, I can occasionally get groups under 1 inch at that distance.
My barrels are one in nine twist.
I never had any luck with heavier bullets.

Iam going to try it. For 308 it works great and in 7.62x39 I also had good luck. Just never hear about anybody using it in 223

My boys liked my 150 gr loads with BLC2 the best. Said they didint kick as hard ,more of a push in the x39

Have had hit and miss results in .223 with BLC2.When I have worked up an acceptable load with it.... one of H4895,H335,or Varget gave me a bit more accurate load.I tend to try .223 loads with those powders in that order with Benchmark as a fourth

When I still had 223s it was my go to powder. I used 55gr jacked and Lee Bator (mine weigh 60) in several ARs, 2 boltguns and a couple Mini-14s. I never did any long distance shooting, but it got boringly consistent swinging 4” & 6” plates at 80yrds. Also very effective shooting armadillos out to 100-120yrd.

I’ve used it in 30-06 & 30-30, it was ok, but I got better results with 4895 in the ‘06 and RL-7 in the 30-30.

I have shot a several pounds of BLC thru my bolt guns. I found a sale on AA2230. I would never go back to BLC or H335. I am a prairie dog shooter

and using the AA2230 eliminates the need to stop and clean . Using the other 2 we usually cleaned every 100 rounds. My main rifle has over 15000 rounds thru it by me. It was used when I bought it. And yes it is time for a new barrel.

I like BL(c)-2 with 55fmj in one of my AR15’s....easily sub MOA. I used 26.0.

I use Varget in my .223, especially with the 69 and 77gn bullets. Mine is a 22" barrel bolt action with 1:9 twist. It is 1/2MOA out to 300yd with the 77SMK's. I even shot a 1 1/2 MOA target at 1000yd with it just for grins.

The nice thing for me is the temperature stability. Cold temp groups are almost exact same point of impact as hot temps at 300yd.

I tried BLC2 in my .308 and went back to Varget.

If you have the BLC then I'd use it with the 55 gr bullets. If not then I'd stick with H335 for the 55 gr bullets and Varget for the heavier bullets.

Back in the early to mid '70s I used a lot of BLC under 52 - 55 gr bullets in a M700V 223. It performed excellently in accuracy and velocity. However, when I tried H335 it performed so much better especially in ARs and Mini14s. BLC is a bit slower than H335 similar to 748 in the 223. Varget has become the go to" powder for the match heavier bullets though I use AA2460 (similar to BLC and 748) to duplicate M855 loads with 62 - 64 gr bullets.

27gr of BLC2 has worked very well for me using 69 SMKs in a 24" bolt gun (3090fps). I use 28.5gr of it for 50gr Vmax and Blitzkings too (3450fps). I've not had to clean a barrel due to loss of accuracy using BLC2 (250-300 rounds between cleanings), but it does have a lot of what appears to be graphite in the residue I clean out of muzzle devices.

Those loads are not low-pressure and my FC headstamp brass is on the lower end of the commercial range of weights which indicates to me that it has more case capacity than other makes.

I have not tried to use varget with 55s, only 77SMKs and it works very well there. From online load data I see H335 is faster than BLC2.

That said, I have no idea how all those work in an AR gas system.

Thanks for all the replies. Will load up some next week to try out. My son was home for the holidays from the marines for two weeks and did not want to go shoot. said that’s all he’s been doing. He is in school now so maybe when he gets leave again we can go shoot together. I will go as long as it’s above 35 to 40 degrees. Below that my hands get very numb and I can’t shoot

I find that my Colt H-Bar will not group well with 55 gr. flat base bullets but will shoot 55 gr. boattails just fine. I attribute this to the 1-7 twist. All 3 of my bolt guns shoot Bl-c2 / 55 gr. great. 1-9 to 1-14 twist in the bolt guns. I have not used any 55gr flat base reloads in my 1-9 M4 clone.(a lot of 55 gr. FMJ which shoots fine) I bought a lot of BL-c2, years ago because it shot so well in my old Rem. 788. I think you will be pleased with it in your gun.

I have used BL-C2 in .223 bolt guns shooting prairie dogs and noticed that the more round I shot the more accurate it became, up to about 120 rounds, then the accuracy started to fall off.
    Just my observation.

blc2 wc846 and 748 all burn about the same. When I first started loading I was given 12 lbs of blc2 and I used it in 223 222 308 243 and 250 sav. Its a great powder for even 55s in a 223. Anymore ive gone to 2230 on the faster side and ramshot tac when 846 isn't available. But I sure wouldn't turn down some blc2 if it was offered.
