Decided to take a new approach.

I've decided to start over with my rifle rounds.

Basically, I've decided to go with a round to use for both hunting and long distance.

I have a 200 gr Lee headed to the house. It's probably going to be 185/190 when casted with my alloy. I'm going to work up a load for 200 yards and it 300 yards.

This same bullet I can hunt with.

I'm excited to work up a load. Hoping to get around 1950 fps.

The weight of this round let's me go after anything in my state.

I'd personally want a design with a flat nose if I was going to hunt with it. Especially if I was going to cast it real hard like it sounds like you are.

Have you considered the RCBS 180 grain FP? It has shot well in all the rifles I've tried it in, and they come out over 190 grains from my mold.

For small game, it would be fine. That bullet, cast hard, is a lost deer. Others have tried with soft alloy, however, it takes a very soft alloy to expand that round nose bullet.

    Hmm, interesting.

I didn't think my alloy was that hard. My NOE 165 - 311 RANCHDOG mold is 160 out of the mold.

youd need a nose that's pure or very close to it to get expansion at your 200-300yds velocity. if for accuracy you need lead that's hard enough that your losing weight you should probably do one of the things to help it be softer like powder coating, paperpatching, or softpoints

you should be able to hunt anything with it, it just takes some work to get expansion at lower speeds. I hit a lengthwise deer with a 170 fp at about 1550fps at the distance it was, and the lead was 2.5% antimony air cooled and barely expanded at all. youd be about 1400fps at 300yds. if I had to expand at that speed id either paperpatch pure lead or make a 2 alloy softpoint and powder coat it if you can. softpoints are probably preferable cause you can just make whatever hardness you need for accuracy sight in and use it. then before hunting season make 10 with some very soft lead in the nose of the cavity and it should shoot the same and not require any spending to make.

It would be a great coyote round. Two small holes if you like to save the pelt.

LAKEMASTER, ive used that exact same cast boolit from Lee and it has killed three nice deer, dropping where they stood. I was using a .30-06. Develope the load and go hunting.

If you get a Foster hollow point adapter you can turn any boolit into a hunting round, with the right alloy. Hollow pointing a boolit doesn't change the poi from what I've seen.

I’ve killed plenty of deer with that mold. I PC size to .311 for MY Garand over 34 grn of imr4064 my alloy is 50/50 we/Pb with 2% tin every deer I’ve killed has dropped in its tracks out to 150 yards, I have even taken that boolit out to 400 in a 300 blk shooting it super sonic

I guess no matter what, I'm going to make a load for this and see what it's limits are. Be it hunting or killing paper plates. I'll keep everyone posted. Until then I'd like to hear what everyone thinks. Especially those using a similar bullet

A small flat on the end or a dimple with a drill bit on the nose. OR
A small strip of thin aluminum foil across the top of the bullet a quarter inch into the bullet tip in the mould to split the tip.
The bullet will upset when it enters the game.
It only takes a little bit to make a big change when the lead hits the game.
Any of these changes at rifle velocity and using a heavy bullet will make the lead bullet cast hard or soft much more effective.
    Don't be afraid to experiment.
These are proven ways to change your hit.
Just remember to only keep the change small and let the rifle velocity and the lead do the rest.
In a handgun bullet you need a lot bigger change , but in a rifle, a little is a lot more.
Only a small flat or dimple on the bullet tip is all you need.
Your bullet will penetrate better and not blow up on the skin.
But it will expand deeper in where you need it.

The Ranchdog is about as good a hunting bullet as you're going to get in .30 caliber, why change?

The mold I have isn't the 311041 mold most people consider RANCHDOG. mine has the .250 diameter metplate.

The Ranchdog isn't the same as the 311041, completely different design.

Good read here written by a member here who has since passed. http://www.castbullet.com/reload/meplat.htm

So, does anyone think my RANCHDOG bullet would be an MOA accuracy bullet at 200 yards?

I'm totally out of my mind, I don't know why I thought the 311041 was the same as the RANCHDOG........ I guess maybe I was thinking of the 2 different RANCHDOG molds. I know there's one with a smaller metplate.

regardless the bullet that accuracy is dependent on many factors . Only your rifle can answer that question
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
