    PC over Hi Tek

I have PC'd for years and have had no issues whatsoever. Someone recently gave me some boolits that were coated with Hi Tek. Long story short, they lead. Recovered boolits show the coating being cut through by the rifling. My question ( I searched and found no answer) is "can you PC over Hi Tek"?

No! Nothing will stick to it, that's the whole idea, it makes them slippery. They will have to be melted down and re-cast.
Couple of questions - what are you shooting (calibre etc), are they commercial coated, how hard are they and can you try a smash test on a couple, i.e. put them on a hard surface and flatten them with a couple of hits from a hammer? If you see any flaking then they're not coated properly.

Have you checked to verify the bullet size? They may be oversized.

If the size is right then what have you lost to give PC it a try? If it will coat the question is will the PC also bond? A smash test would tell you that.

Or they may be under sized for the barrel.

The boolit is a 401-175-TC lee which I load over 5.9 AA#5. My recovered PC boolits have no bare spots after being fired out of my Steyr M-40. The Hi Tek boolits show stripping of the coating and light leading. Both boolits are the same diameter after sizing.

Well if my understanding is correct then it should be fine. Hi-tech is nothing more than PC mixed with acetone.

I have added a second coat to PC bullets several times.

PC will stick to anything negatively charged

Ummmm..... No. It is not. Powdercoat is completely different to HITEK coating.

I’ve tried to PC HiTek boolits and it won’t stick. You can certainly try and your results may vary?

The OP still has not said what his barrel measures and how sharp the throat is.

I don't know where people get this silly idea. PC is NOT Hi-Tek. Don't believe me. Mix some powder coat powder in acetone.

stubshaft, there are several unanswered questions:

    1) who did the HiTek Coating (IF hiTek is done improperly IT WILL FAIL (you test HiTek boolits by smashing into a penny like PC AND wiping with s white cloth/paper dampened with acetone or MEK IF the color comes off the coating was not properly cured --- I'd either melt them down or lube them)

    2) is the boolit sized larger than the bore diameter?

How about just swirling the bullets in some Lee liquid alox? Add a little lead protection.

    It sticks to everything.....

When PC first appeared, a lot of people were mixing the PVC powder with Acetone as a carrier. It never worked very well for me and probably deterred a lot of people from powder coating.

For high volume pistol ammo, I powder coat 1X and load. For high velocity rifle rounds, I Hitek 3X.
