Remington 512 Sportmaster refinish

Another one, this one is a Remington 512 Sportmaster (the second one I have done). It wasn't in too bad of shape, the stock needed some cleaning up. Then I polished and reblued most of the steel parts

It's ready for its next kid. Great guns; I learned on Dad's 511 and Uncle Elbert had the 512. I just refreshed a 510 for my grandson. Beautiful job, sir.

Nice job. I have a 512 Sportmaster. When I got it it was a shocker. I cleaned it up, repaired the rotten stock, repaired the bolt, fitted a scope and proceeded to take all the 22 silhouette prizes with it. Many a rabbit and hare and other varmint fell prey to it. My great nephew learned to shoot with it, my son took his first (and only) hare with it. Wonderful rifle.

I got it in my late twenties from my uncle who brought it over to South Africa. It's 1940 something model. I found the year of manufacture from the code on the rifle. I forget exactly what year.

Very nice. I have one of the clip fed versions of this and my uncle's boys rifle, the single shot version. Have had others over the years. Great rifles, though I slightly prefer the Winchester 69 and 72 series rifles. The Remingtons are probably just as good or better shooters. I wish more good, inexpensice bolt action .22 rifles were still made.

This 510 was cut down and sold for $7 in the 1970s.
I put a new butt on it.

I inherited my Dad’s 512 Rem. 15 years ago and mine now looks remarkably like yours. (I did have to reline the barrel because as kids we shot too many “bird shot shells through lt ��) BTW, +1 on a nice job.

For along time I used Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil on all my stocks, and it was alot of work.

The last few I've done, I've used Minwax Helmsman Polyurethane, and it works so good it is criminal.

Super fine mist spray super easy to apply and about 6-8 light coats with 2 hours in between yields a very durable finish that will stand up to alot of use.

I did my Browning A5 Slug gun with it and it came out nice. If I do say.

I think I'm going to refinish my Rem 514 stock which I did with Tru Oil 40 years ago. I also altered the bolt on that gun and I've never been happy with it so I'll fix that too.
