H&R revolver help

A co-worker brought a H&R model 732 .32 S&W revolver for me to repair for him. The problem is that it can’t be cocked in either mode- SA or DA. But if you swing out the cylinder the lock work seems fine. The hand seems correct as well as the springs, hammer and trigger. The bolt is not dropping to let the hand rotate the cylinder, apparently. Before I punch out the pins and turn it into a 3D exploded drawing, I thought I’d pick the brain trust here. It’s a cute little round butt snubby with some neat old black logo grips. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the cylinder stop's spring is either broken, the stop may be worn/binding, or some debris may be lodged in there.

The only way to know for sure is to completely disassemble the action for inspection.

I have owned a couple of them, and worked on a few more. There seems to be burrs that develop and gather junk to prevent proper function. They all responded positively to dremeling the rough spots and cleaning / lubrication. Several of the parts are case hardened so it's not super easy. Seemed like a really tough gun to reassemble, keeping track of the springs can be a challenge also. It's been suggested elsewhere to not disassemble, just soak it in solvent and lubricate. A local gunsmith said it's among the most common gun to show up disassembled in a Ziploc bag - sans springs.

Judging from the dust bunnies in the barrel, this one hasn’t seen the light of day in a while. Thank you both very much- onward through the fog!

I worked on one a few years ago. I hope I never have to work on another. cwtebay is right about reassembly.

I have the NEF equivalent- I'd take the grips off and hose the whole thing with brake cleaner then a spritz with light oil- could just be crud, esp in the sear/spring area.

I've fixed 2 revolvers that had similar
troubles.

In both cases, the nylon part on the
mainspring (part 24 in the diagram)
that interfaces with the hammer
was in some stage of crumbling.

I got new spring assemblies from
Numrich.

FredBuddy did what I had to do part number 24A and you might have to trim the rod a little to get it right

Thanks, that's my standard first stab but I use B12 carb cleaner and an air compressor. When dissipated, I oil what I can reach. Fixes some; not this one.

Well shoot. Then my experience has been a dremel and a buffing stone. And a whole lot of patience. As I stated above, this is definitely not a nice AR type takedown and reassembly. I hope it goes really well!

I would start by stoning off anything that will catch a cotton ball roughness-wise. Your springs look good! Don't ignore the hammer interface, it is generally rough also. Lube the snot out of it before you put it back together.
Hopefully you got a few ribeyes of the skies to help smooth the process!

Mine works so I have not messed with it other than basic cleaning. This is my favorite of all pistol for the last 2 years. Small, lightweight, the .32sw long doe not beat me up. And if I can do my pert, capable of very good accuracy.

If mine quit working i'd probably buy a spare first, then see about fixing.

I love the little Baretta 81 in .32acp, but it is bigger, longer, heavier. On plus side it has 12 ready to the H&R's 6.

I've has very good success cleaning old pistols with an Ultrasonic cleaner. I bought the Ultrasonic cleaner to work on carburetor parts but found that immersing a whole pistol (less the grips) in a solution of kerosene cleaned all the curd off.
Just a thought.

Thanks, atr. That's my wife's only .22 handgun and she loves it. She pointed at a Webley at a gun show and said " I want that- it's just like my .22!" Yes, dear it sorta is.....

The 999 always seemed to punch above its weight to me. it was the unofficial boys revolver of Southern Illinois back in the day. I miss H&R.
