Is this Winchester a good deal??

I saw a Win model 70 .30-06 at local pawn shop. they asking $250.
It is well used, looks like it rode many mile behind seat of truck.
it is the push feed model, not the mauser claw.
surface rust on barrel, may not clean up; action and stock look better shape than barrel
    is it worth $250?

Without looking at it, my gut tells me $250 is too much if it is as you described. I would offer $150 and be prepared to walk away. But that is just me. The push feed model 70's aren't anything really special.

Unless the barrel is pitted and the bore is bad that’s a pretty good deal, especially for an old school walnut stocked gun.

Well, I saw it as an alternative to building up a old mil-surp Mauser98.
Just to bend bolt handle, install trigger and/or safety, drill scope mounts, buy a sporter stock, I saw $250 worth of saved effort compared to working up a M98.
Would the push feed M70 compare to a M98? (other than the claw extractor)

It is worth it especially if it is a post '68 one with the anti-bind feature. As you said $250 doesn't go far customizing a '98 Mauser. The Model 70 has all the features you want, a good trigger, convenient safety, scope compliant bolt and a decent stock. Go for it as a shooter or truck gun.

Always offer less at a pawn shop even if you are willing to eventually pay their asking price. Never know.

The anti bind feature is a small rail on the right side of the action with a corresponding groove in the right hand bolt lug. This keeps the bolt in line properly when operated. You can see it with the action open and the bolt retracted. Or you can pull the bolt and look for the groove in the bottom of the right hand lug. Those push feed Winchester Model 70's are as good or better than most rifles out there. Dyed in the wool Winchester fans don't think they are as desirable as the pre-64 but most are good shooters and function reliably.

You're looking at it the right way by comparing what scope friendly options cost on a surplus rifle . If the inside of the barrel looks like it will shoot and the bedding of the action is good . It sounds reasonable to me .

Buy it cheap and stack it deep , you may need it !

250 doesn't sound too bad for what you describe and probably be happier with the Win than military 98 mauser that needs "everything" done to it. They don't have many problems, ejector and extractor seem most common and the fix is to wash the crud/oil/varnish build up out of it with spray brake cleaner without even taking it out of the bolt. Otherwise you could experience 2 seconds to remove it, 2 hours looking for the detent ball or spring, that's usually before you order new ones.

Look at the push feed 70 bolt and the Savage 110- extractor and ejectors are TWINS. That is why they both experience the same problems, so if you own one and actually shoot it will rear its ugly head eventually, but no big deal.

I would think that $250.00 would be a good price for the action alone. The rest of the rifle is just gravy on the deal. I have always liked the Model 70 Winchesters and the push feed works and works well. I had a post 64 Model 70 in .308 Winchester and wish I still had it. I gave it to my son and he sold it to help with expenses when he started married life just out of the Marines. A claw extractor is really only needed on a dangerous game animal, not required for other species. I like push feeds and never had a problem with one or for that matter, a claw extractor model. my experience anyway, james

One of my mentors swore by one in 25-06. Every deer I kill with that cartridge makes me think of him and his m70. I had a 90's synthetic .243 and it was a good one for $300 back then.

I went 'pawn shopping' today, and stopped by the winchester M70.
It appears to have a birchwood stock, no checkering, and I cannot tell which model is the bolt.
it is still just as ugly as I first mentioned.
perhaps I could jewel the bolt and make it look nicer
    it is serial number #G206xxxx
which bolt is this serial #
    is it the later bolt?

Yes guide rib, it's a Ranger with the unchecked birch stock, both my birch stocked 670's were press checkered and no bottom metal, this one has bottom metal doesn't it. The action is worth the asking price IMHO
