One half gill (2.5 oz.) of real British Admiralty rum, https://www.kegworks.com/naval-rum-measure-half-gill to 1/2 pint of boiling water, which should NOT be from a municipal treated source, but best from a natural spring-fed source, 1 pat (1/3 tablespoon) of butter, stirred with and/or sipped through a cinnamon stick!

Me Sainted Mother would not have condoned of adding sugar or allspice to hot buttered rum, that would be "only for Nancy boys from Cambridge or Eton"

The old fashioned way, a mug of cider, rum, a pat of butter, and a hot poker from the fireplace.

Hard cider was the Colonial American iteration and I remember the hot poker being used on the farm.

Brits used tea with a bit of ginger, which is OK, but being raised as a kid on hot grog as a cold remedy, I prefer it.

I don't know how to make them and I have no desire to learn, but if I'm ever in the mood for one,

Gracie's Sea Hag In Depoe Bay, Oregon makes the best I've ever had. World-Class Bloody Mary's, too!

Shouldn't the recipe say stir the mix with the hot poker till it melts together. AND we lose a lot of pokers that way
