    First Bear

I shot my first bear with a 357 Maximum rifle loaded with an Accurate 270gr LFP powdercoated and fueled with AA 1680 at about 1755fps. That combo did quite well on the treed 190lb bear.

    Thanks, Dinny

Sweet! With a melon shot he's not going anywhere! I’m sure that beer had no clue what hit him. Your rug maker is going to have a little sewing to do. I’d give up deer hunting for the rest of my life to be able to go hunting deer season every year! It’s been a good 10 years since I’ve gone last and have my points building up again for Wisconsin. I have three under my Belt now I would like to put a zero behind it.

What alloy did you use? That sure made a big hole Is that the entry or exit hole in the neck? It made a nice big entry or exit which ever it is.

A friend cast the bullets, all I know is that they're hard cast. That was the exit wound and the bear wasn't more than 20yds away. He did run after hitting the ground and rolling downhill a bit. Another few shots anchored him. I missed the spine and suppose the shockwave stunned him real good. I plan to test a softer alloy soon to see if I can slightly reduce penetration and increase expansion. The same bullet was shot into a box filled with wet pacjed newspaper and shows a little expansion after penetrating 17". All the rest of those bullets I tested penetrated thru the box. I have never had that happen before.

    Thanks, Dinny

I figured that was a solid neck shot and he dropped in the spot. Good size exit hole So it must have expanded pretty well.

Lol... We can get 30 packs around here pretty cheap.

I cast those for Dinny. Those where W/W air cooled. IIRC. SOFTER BLUE had 25/30% soft lead added.

(Some where in that box that got swiped I sent ya. ;( )

    Good job Dinny!!

    Greetings and Congratulations !
That 270 grain flat nose slug chugging along at 1755 fps will do in most any critter when plopped in the right spot.

Thanks to all who have replied. I'm hooked on bears but need to shoot them closer to a trail or road.

    Thanks, Dinny

Nice bear, Dinny. 190 is a good sized bruin. Should be pretty fat this time of year, and delicious! The fat renders down into the finest cooking oil. Good for waterproofing your boots too. Congrats!
