38 long and short bullets

I recently joined the ranks of the 38 long club. Of course the first thing you need is a bullet. I started looking for the right mold and went over to Old West Moulds. Bernie has a nice 150 grain bullet that should duplicate the original. I ordered up some samples to try before getting the mold.
I built up a dummy round and remembered I had a vintage umc 38 short round laying around somewhere. When I found it I realized Bernie knocked this out of the park again.


Left is original UMC 38 s&w, next is mocked up 38 long with OWM bullet. Next it's the original outside lubed UMC 38 Short and the OWM heeled 38 150 grain bullet. The profile is actually closer than the photo shows.

This will go great in my 36 remington clone and the kirst cylinder.

Hello Mike,

I've been using Black MZ in my 44 Colt Original, no need for lube.
Seems to work fine and no leading with soft bullets.

I have loaded 38 Long Colt with the Lee mold #90328. This is an inside lubricated design, 150 grain RN pattern that closely resembles the early inside lubed factory loads. Results of firing this load have been satisfactory.

I have a homemade 44 colts heeled mold that I made, it's very accurate for being such a piece of amateur junk. I've used APP and Black MZ. The Black MZ is fascinating stuff. I need to chrono my 44 Colts and the 38 Long and see what they are getting with the "new" black powders. Are you crimping the 44 colts? I can't remember which die I use but I put them part way up a sizing die (case sizing) and it gives a good friction grip. Can't crimp but I think I'm on to a solution. Before I break down and buy bernie's...

I have a Kirst .38 long-colt cyl. in a circa. 1972 Colt .36 navy revolver. Bernie at Old West made a light weight..130gr. heeled-hollow base mould for me. Bullet has lube groove in heel. Haven't had time to try out yet.
