First deer with the 71 Mauser

I passed up a number of small buck (still looking for the big one) but found this big doe. The 71 Mauser that I rebuilt did more than well!

Nice long head. Cool rifle. What boolit and load?

    Howdy BlackPowderLove,

That's a fine packet of meat, and a gorgeous old rife. Did you do the woodwork?

Tell us more about rifle, load, etc.

Also, how does that tang sight not get in the way of your grip on the rifle? It seems to me there isn't enough room to place a hand either in front of, or behind it.

    Happy trails,

    To answer questions…
This is the 1871 that was museum quality in looks but nine firing about a year ago and I did all the work on it, including the carving. The site is a little far back but fits quite nicely in my hand. Having it further back also helps with the bolt. I am shooting 70 grains of 1.5 OE and filling the rest of the way with pufflon. The bullet is one I am casting from a custom mold from accuratemolds that is .450 and about 400 grains.

    BPLove,

I really like your stock carving. The carved deer scene adds both beauty and interest to a fine ol' smokepole.

    Happy trails,

    Good morning and Congratulations !
It is enjoyable to read these about the hunts when the old firearms are well used.
