    Pewter pencil hardness

I don't know if this is common knowledge or not.
I bought some pewter at the thrift store the other day and while driving around at work I wondered what the pencil hardness was. I checked with my set of Staedtler pencils and came up with this. H would cut with a little difficulties but 2H cut easily.

Pewter is usually 88 -- 9+% tin with lead and maybe some other alloys. I would think that 3B/4B should mark it depending on the balance of the alloy(s) in it. some have a little antimony in it

If you look at your second chart you will find pewter.
It shows a brinel of 23 that's about the same as Lyno.
Lyno = H pencil. This is the first I saw that middle chart.

Thanks for the post...good to know. I knew that pewter was harder than lead but wouldn't have had any idea what it would register at.

Conditor -Thanks for the charts. If ever member of the forum kept them for reference .. the 'how hard is my lead or how do I measure my lead' questions would be few and far in between
