Got any Rosii 92 owners out there with a 357 - rd count

I recently purchased a 20'' late model Rossi 92 in 357> There are a few differences I noticed compared to the Interarms SRC in 44 I use to own. Over-all I am pleased, besides from the usual smoothing/deburing required, really pretty nice gun. Wood to metal fit is nice, butt plate doesn't hang over stock like many reviews I've read. I'm pleased, just need to go shoot it.

Now for the question. I swear I read somewhere that a 20'' Rossi 92 is suppose to hold 12 38SPL rounds once the spring is shortened to about 3 cases outside the mag tube. I trimmed to that length, only 10 rds, trimmed a couple more coils 11 rds chambered in mag tube.

I'm stumped, scared to remove any more coils from spring, Randy.

How many rounds do you need ?

Is this a "zombie" gun ?

Or do you just want to get as many rounds into the mag as possible ? My old B92 held 10rds of .44Mag or 11rds of .44Spl Same as My Win 94AE 20" bbl.
My Rossi 92 in .44-40 24"bbl holds 14, but then I load the .44-40 & .45Colt to a short O.A.L. for Cowboy shooting. The Kids Marlin 1894CS holds 10rds of .38Spl, CA Dept of Fish & Game limits to 5rds in the Gun when Hunting. Never needed more.
My Uberti Carbines, hold 10rds in the 19" 1866 & 1873. The 24" 1873 Rifle holds 14 in the mag tube.

And they all have the original mag tube springs.

Walks, I just want to get as many rounds into the mag as possible. Maybe my memory is faulty. I thought I read you could shoe-horn 12 rounds of 38 if you trimmed the spring. Wanted to get the real-deal B4 I start trimming any more of the spring off.

My 24" with a factory spring will take 14 rounds of 38 special if that is any help.

brewer12345, thanks for the input. I am curious about the 20'' model that I have. Maybe my memory is failing me about the 12 rounds in a 20'' carbine. Unless I can get any input about the 20'' model I guess I'll have to live with 11 rounds. Thanks, Randy.

    Wadcutters ? 1.265" X 12 = 15.18". How long is the Mag Follower ?

Heh, if you want to maximize rounds in the mag, a Marlin 39A holds 25 shorts.

Sir, I agree about that plastic follower. It is the first thing I changed. Randy.

You might find the twelvth round is tha one in the chamber - that was the standard winchester blurb - 20inch carbine holds 11 (normal length rounds) - yeah one up the spout and ten down under - I could never get number 11 in a standard carbine magazine (had a couple winnchesters and a early rossi) close but no go - maybe shorten the spring OR thinner diameter wire for the spring then ya could shoehorn that last one in .............just get a longer barrel - I have one I rebarrelled with a 26inch tube = 14 plus one ........

Here is the 12th 38 Special round trying to go in,getting very close, keeps on knocking but it just can't go in, a 20" Rossi 92 unmodified. Made by Taurus.

So mine is 11+1. Cutting the tube spring just a tad would make this a 12+1 with 38 Special.

Thank you all. I believe 11 + 1 is the answer. Randy.

Mine is a 20" pre-Taurus model. I can manage 11 .357's at 1.59" and my spring sticks out some 5-6" beyond the end of the mag tube, so spring length probably isn't the issue. That last one in won't move 1/8" beyond the end of the loading gate. Twelve .38's and I can get another about 1/3 of the way in. It sounds like there may be a difference in the follower plug on the end of your spring. BTW, don't shorten your spring any further. I don't think that's what the difference is. Look up Nate Kiowa Jones (Steve) of Steve's Gunz online and give him a call and talk to him about it. He's the current Rossi '92 guy and will be able to give you an answer about any changes that have been made to them since Rossi was acquired by Taurus.

Gentlemen, an update, I accidentally found out my 357 20;; barreled Rossi 92 can, and does hold 12 + rounds, with one caveat. I have to load a couple short bullets in the mag. Like the Lee 105 SWC. Click image for larger version.

Thanks to all who responded. Randy.

Factory standard Taurus/Rossi 20" .44 mag holds 10 shots in the tube...still has the plastic follower. An older .44-40 Rossi carbine with a steel follower holds 11 shots. An old original Winchester M1892 sporting rifle with 24" barrel/tube holds 13 shots(.44-40). A old Winchester M1892 SRC with the barrel and mag-tube cut down to 18" in .44-40 holds 9 shots in the tube.

Ragnarok, that's interesting stuff. I envy you owning original Win 92's. Mines a factory Rossi, other than a Winchester blued, steel mag plunger and shortened spring about 5''. Thanks, Randy.
