I was given a metal keg of Red Dot. It looks and smells o.k. so I want to use it. Does anyone load Red Dot in 45LC?? My manuals say 6.0-6.5 is a usable load for a 250 gr LSWC.

6.5 and a 250 gr keith are an accuracy load for me in a Blackhawk. I own no other 45 but this gives you near 1000 fps with low pressure.

I like Red Dot in 45 colt , I like it in a bunch of pistol ammo
I'm not sure of what you're shooting it in. One of the members here, probably many others, use 6.5 grains as their favorite 255 grain revolver load.
I shoot quite a bit of it in cartridges from 30-30, 35 Remington, 444, and others. It is quite versatile. Won't give top velocities but will give good to great accuracy in many cases and the "fun" factor is quite high.
Enjoy that keg!

I use Red Dot for just about everything. In .45 Colt, I like 6.5 grains with a 250 grain bullet. Great powder. That’s gow I discovered it, too, a friend gave me a 12 pound keg of it.

I need someone to give me a keg or a pound of Red Dot. I predict you will love it. It will make most any gun go bang.

In the .45 Colt, 6.5 grains of Red Dot seemed to work well under any bullet for me.195 grain SWCs for the .45 ACP on up to "standard" 255 grain bullets.
5.5 with a rcbs 45-270saa bullet, thats my pest control round.
You can find some of the older Alliant reloading guides on line they seem to have more data for Red Dot than most current manuals.
45LC
30/30
45acp
Just for starters look up online the data for alot of caliber you will probably find Red dot in there

My only .45colt is in a Handi Rifle. But 6.5 grains of Red Dot over a lee 230 gr truncated cone bullet shoots lights out. Stacks 5 in a inch at 100, maybe 1.25 if I'm not having a great day. But I'm more than happy with it.
I was fooling around with some red dot in my Ruger RH 7.5” and also had an inside flash hole deburring tool that I used with my varmint cartridges.
On a lark, I thought about “dirty ‘ole red dot” and wondered what deburring some 44 cases would do towards upping my “gas mileage”.. Well I did not chronograph them but to my eye the burn was more complete.
It was not long after this I began treating all my brass with that tool. I wore one out and bought another. When my current one wears out I will replace it as well. For me, when I put up brass it gets the treatment.

In addition to widespread use in handgun cartridges, research "The Load" using 13 grs. of Red Dot for specific rifle cartridges.
How close is "Red" to Red Dot?

How big is a metal keg? A friend went through a gun show with what I think we're 35 lb containers of surplus 860 for his reloading business. If it's 35 lbs you have a lot of shooting in your hands. I almost cried trying for one of his containers.
The small red metal kegs are 12 pounders.
LOL ya got me on that one for sure. Getting old sucks!
