Need opinions for youth shotgun

I was always small growing up. I was under 5' at 16 (now 6') I used my Mom's .410 for trap shooting. Actually got good at it hitting about 22 out if 25 consistently. Kept beating my father so he stopped taking me. Anyway I agree with the Winchester 101 idea. It was one of the few 12 ga that I could easily shoot. Good luck.

I was six when I put a Daisy BB gun on layaway at a hardware store. I paid it off with my allowance, and discovered I could put a newspaper inside a cardboard milk carton, and catch the BBs for re-use. I spent hours shooting at milk cartons.

One thing Ive noticed is attention spans vary a lot among people. Out in the woods something will catch his eye and hunting will be done for then. Ive seen this taking kids fishing, frogs dragoon flies muskrats or something catches their eye and the pole is forgotten. Working in the back yard or basement on becoming accurate will help a lot when the first trip comes. Don't always use paper targets here but some fun targets air gun silhouette targets can be made or purchased, cheap aspirin tablets, neco candy wafers, small pill bottles , bottle caps, and many other things can become challenging targets. Sometimes a reactionary target holds attentions longer. Work with him to be accurate first then bring the hunting into the picture. Also determine if shooting an animal might "bother" him.

When I got a youth gun for my boys I went with the Mossberg 500 Bantam in 20 ga. I chose it over the Remington youth because the Mossberg sets the forearm back towards the receiver so the kid don't have to stretch his arm a mile to hold the forearm.
An added plus is there is a model that comes with both youth and full size stock so you aren't looking for one several years later.
