New O-rings for old boolit size dies

My newest size die for the old Lyman 45 is something over 10 years old, and my oldest ones came from Herter's, so you know these things have been around for a while. And the last few years I have been seeing O - ring failures. I have tried getting O - rings from the hardware store but never quite hit it right and they have either been a scosh too small and leaky, or a scosh too big and get torn up on insertion.

I ordered a small selection of different sizes from "The O -ring Store" www.theoringstore.com/‎

I'm sure these were originally 1/16th inch rings so you'd think you'd want 1.6mm in a metric. But the 1.6 ers leaked a bit. The ones that seem perfect are marked as "1.78mm X 14mm" from their Buna-N 70 Duro selection. No more scavenging O - rings -- I can replace them as they fail. I'm a happy li'l camper!

Thanks for posting, I wondered if I would be able to replace them when the time comes. Good information.

Needed one once and found them at IIRC Ace Hardware. Pack is made by Danco, size #35, 11/16 OD x 9/16 ID my 1/16 thick. Came ten to a pack from the plumbing section. PM sent.

NOTE: These are for the new 450 model held in by a lock ring.

Earl, have you tried the O-rings at NAPA meant for hydraulic fittings?

No I didn't try any of the auto parts stores -- just did the lazy google thing. Do you have a recommendation for NAPA O-rings?

Another type of ring you can try is a quad ring. I have used them, I clean, wipe the sizing die and take it into a hydraulic shop and match them up. They hold better because they have four point sealing edges and are more durable?

I used a Danco #54 - 11/16 x 9/16 x 1/16. I got mine at an Ace Hardware several years ago, may be available elsewhere too.

Edit-Well, it looks like my #54 has the same dimensions as the #35 in Post #3. Anyway, we agree on dimensions so that part is probably correct.
