Can a H&R .223 be re chambered to 224 Valkerie?

So I have an H&R heavy barrel .223 single shot rifle that is just a dismal rifle. It was the most inaccurate rifle I owned until I stretched the COL way out to get kinda close to the lands and now it is just not accurate instead of horrible. I was wondering if it is possible to ream this barrel to something else? Maybe a 224 Valkerie? I'm open minded to any caliber cuz I wouldn't mind buying some new dies and working up some new loads and its a single shot so brass availability isn't a huge concern.

If it's not accurate now, changing the chamber probably wont help. To clean up the .223 chamber you'll have to go to 22-250 or .220 Swift- .22 Nosler, .224 Val are too short in the body.
Send it to Jes to become a .35 something or a 38-55 or ......

I did some more thinking about it even if the Valkerie was on option (long enough) I still wouldn't have the twist rate I needed. I think 222 rem mag might be an option, but sending it to Jes? that may b e a option also. I will have to find out who that is.

Those 223 chambered factory barrels can be rechambered to the 222 Remington Magnum Improved and can gain as much as 200-300 fps in velocity, and better accuracy because it allows for a new throat section to be cut.

You can load for the round using less expensive 223 Ackley Improved dies, by backing the die up away from the shell holder, so as not to push the shoulder back and create headspace issues.

And if you cannot locate any 222 Remington Magnum brass, you can always use 204 Ruger brass, fireform it to the new chamber, reload it and go have some fun.

Since you have a heavy barrel, Jes can re-bore your .224" bore to pretty much any bore size, with a choice of rifling twist rates.

225 Winchester is a good candidate as its rimmed. It cleans out a 223/556 chamber. But find brass first.

You need to watch pressures too. Yes they chamber high pressure cartridages like 270. They are better suited to older lower pressure rimmed cases.

If you like a 35, The 356 is a dandy!

If a 30 is more to your liking a 30/40 is excellent.

Check calibers factory offered before you commit as it might be cheaper to sell
Or trade off what you have for another barrel already chambered.

Go check over on greybeards outdoors. They are the Handi / H&R / NEF authority
