30 Gibbs build

I have several 26'' 30cal barrels and an old Savage 110 action, and since I have a 375 Whelen I thought a 30 Gibbs would fit the bill. I have read that Gibbs used 1 in 10'' twist but did do them with 1 in 12'' and 1 in 14''twist and I have both those. I intend to use 150 to 168gr jacketed for this rifle. I would welcome any comments on my choices of barrel action or projectiles. The intended use will be a long range deer rifle. Interested to hear from those who use this calibre. Regards Stephen

The Gibbs cartridges have seen very little action in the US since the 60's. Add to that the fact that Rocky's notes are gone and few of us remember them let alone much about them.

I just read an article about the 30 Gibbs. I don't remember if it was in Guns magazine or American Rifleman. It talked about fire forming the brass from 35 Whelen or 30-06 cases. I can't offer any advise since I know nothing about it other than what I just read.
Sounds like a fun project.

My perception of the Gibbs line of wildcats was they were only intended to give you better performance by rechambering an existing rifle. All the Gibbs cartridges I have heard of used .30-06 brass when you could get it really cheap. Back then .30-06 brass was about a penny a case or less.
If you were going to acquire a new rifle or build a rifle it was easier to get it in some magnum caliber or buy it and rechamber it. There was never any ammo available through normal channels and reloading dies were not widely available for the Gibbs line. Over the years I have never had a chance to pack rat a set of Gibbs dies in any caliber at a bargain price.
The one Gibbs rechambered rifle that I have handled was an FN Mauser rechambered from .243 Win to .240 Gibbs. With the longer case and sharp shoulder the rifle did not feed very well.
