    Patching .58 Minies

I'm thinking about getting a New Englander barrel rebored for .58 minies, rifling form to be the progressive depth grooves as used by the British with their paper patched and lubed ammunition. Besides shooting lubed minies there's a wide variety of lube groove minie molds to choose from that could be paper patched and run through a sizer.
    Anybody tried that approach?

If you're having it rebored for minie balls, why would you want to paper patch a minie with lube grooves? Get the minie that you can size .001-.002 under bore size and shoot it. Be aware that a short barrel needs a faster twist than a musket length barrel. By the way, American rifled muskets used progressive rifling, too.

Being able to lube boolits and to shoot paper patched are options on finding what works in a given piece, be it muzzle loader or one of brass cartridge case guns.
Paper patching minies from a variety of off the shelf molds constitutes more options as with swapping out base plugs from one set of blocks to the other.
The Lyman/Ideal blocks in the fun box are...

Being able to swap out the plugs provides a huge number of design mods.
And an adjustable plug can be the cats meow.

Two somethings really tempting to do with the New Englander:
    a) To use a flat base adjustable plug and try the various mold designs as paper patched boolits.
    b) Go with a longer tapered barrel instead of just reboring the pyrodexed spare .50 cal barrel that I've picked up.
