    Hull and wad recommendations

I’m just getting into reloading shotshells and wanted to get some tips on components. I have a mec 600 and quite a bit of 0 buckshot cast up. I was looking for recommendations on a hull and wad combo before placing an order. I hate to buy stuff I don’t need.
The powders I have are unique, blue dot, longshot, and some faster burning powders. I realize load data is dependent on primer, hull, and wad used. Just would like to start with something that stacks well and crimps good.

Before you go any further, my recommendation is to pick up a good loading manual! The loads you find within will answer your questions.

The keys to your buckshot success:
    1) Use a wad tight enough for a 2-stack load. (I have yet to shoot or load a 3-stack that patterns well)
    2) Cast with hard lead. (minimize distortion of pellets)
    3) Use a little buffer at least in bottom of wad cup.
    4) Don't drive it too hard. (1300 Fps is plenty)
    5) If you have done above shoot from full choke
    6) It's not # of pellets you can get in hull but # of pellets on target.

While it might not be what others use or recommend here’s what I use for the 12 gauge 2 3/4” . Either REM STS or WIN AA hulls , Claybuster knockoff wads for the WIN AA12 , 0 buck 3 to a layer 3 layers for nine total pellets . My loads are lower pressure so I feel comfortable using them in damascus or steel twist so generally I’m at 1100-1150 FPS . All the guns I shoot my handloads in are old double barrels so choke isn’t always my choice but a good many are full and full or mod and full . I usually get close to 4 cc of buffer in the shells . I use SR7625 mostly in this application but Unique or Universal Clays or W572 would be okay I think .

I have a few load manuals just not much for buckshot and slugs. I guess I could just use the weight of my buckshot in substitute for shot data.

you will find that NO plastic does what the old fiber /card will do .
    Blue dot is the best

While I have found plastic wads that perform better, when you are talking about the really big buckshot, 0, 00, 000, etc. then yes. My best patterning loads almost universally use card wads. Bluedot is the best if you want to use 12+ pellets (1 1/4 oz or more), and less I would use Unique. I've got better loads for tight choked guns, but from a cylinder bore, one of my best is a Federal gold medal 2 3/4" hull, Federal 209A primer, bluedot, X12X gas seal, card wads (I forget, but probably a nitro card plus a spacer like cork or felt), and 20 pellets of #2 buckshot.

Well looks like I’ll start my first adventure with Win AA hulls, AA12 wads, and green dot or longshot. Still have to order some buffer.

Get a lyman shot shell reloading manual. That will have all the data you will need. As far as cheap buckshot loads I use target data and just replace with buck. I don't use a buffer. I believe the trick to a good load is a moderate to low velocity. It does not matter how fast it gets there if it's not accurate.

Before you go any father go here and read this entire thread. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...-Blazing-Sabot!

It will tell you everything there is to know about loading shotgun slugs.

Using what you learn there you will be able to go forward and work up your own loads.

Ajay has contributed more on this subject to the world than any other single source, and his data is so valid he should write a book and publish it so we all could buy one and use it as a loading manual.

Lots to learn and most of it is in one place.

Also for what is all stated , the hull when you looking inside of it will be plastic base or wad base. That will say how to load the hull. Best to get a manual on shot shell it will show you the pics of how it looks like for the inside of the hull looks Lyman shotshell manual will give all you like to know and more. Also do like some said weight you buck shot and see what the data is for that weight of close to it .

Cream of Wheat works and it's cheap at your local store.
