    It’s Fall Again

We finally got a break in the hot weather that lasted thru the opening of bow season and into last week. Over 40 days of 90 plus temps. We woke up Saturday morning for the first day of our antlerless firearms season, to frost and calm winds.
A few years ago I decided to start using a handgun for this season so I took my 44 Redhawk loaded with a Devastator clone without the hollowpoint With 16-1 alloy. They weigh 285gr powder coated and gas checked. 23gr of H110 pushes them 1350fps.
My son and I went to separate stands well before daylight to give time for things to settle down. I had only been still for a few minutes when deer started moving thru. I could here them crunching acorns in the dark.
Shortly after daylight a deer walked in and started feeding under a whiteoak at 20 yards. I able to get a good broadside shot and it only went 40 yards before piling up.
A few minutes later I heard my son shoot. He made a good shot with his 7mm-08 to complete our successful first hunt of the year.

Great hunt, those will make fine eats! My experience is you have hams on those deer that will be better than backstraps from a “trophy” buck. They are all prized in my book, congrats on a successful hunt. Oh, fine looking youngster there as well!

    Thanks,
No I have killed several with a handgun. It is a little like bowhunting, but louder.

Yes sir that is what draws me to hunt with a handgun. Bowhunting is just out of the question with one arm.

Wyatt is on a roll. He got a Doe yesterday evening with his crossbow. Arkansas has what is called a Triple Trophy award consisting of a patch and certificate, given to a hunter that kills deer with archery, Muzzleloader, and gun in a single season. This is the third time he has accomplished the triple trophy. He just had his fifteenth birthday and spends as much of his free time as he can in the woods. He loves hunting. The dachshund in the picture is his little buddy, he trained him to blood trail and he is a good one.
