Sako L46 in 222 Rem fills the bill for me, but a CZ 547 in Hornet is right there as well. The CZ should be lots easier to find, and might even find a 221 Fireball, exec better! That Sako is from the 50s, only CZ makes them like that nowadays. I actually prefer a Rem M25 in 32-20 but can’t make them from 223s.

The 527 CZ in .221 Fire Ball would be perfect for what you describe ( if you can find one). The .223 can be loaded down to whatever so it’s probably the sensible choice.

I treasure my 527 American in 223 and a very nice walking rifle!

For day in and out banging around on the ranch I save my beautiful CZ and have a Ruger American Compact also in 223 stand in, another fine walking rifle and half the price!

A five shot rotary flush mount magazine plus a spare feeds it.

My walking around rifle is a Savage 219 in .22 Hornet, but with cast loads, my 219 in .22 Hornet would be good too.

Might want to look fr a Savage 23 in .25-20 or .32-20. I was looking at a Ruger American in .300 Blackout a while back that sounds like exactly what you want.

    I have/have had several wildcats using the 223 as a parent case. Currently have a 20 Tactical, 223AI, 6/223AI, 25/223, and 300blk.

6mm is where it's at for the 223 based wildcats. 6x45 is the best easiest option neck up and go if you don't mind fireforming make it an Ackley or TCU.

I have had a couple things based on the 222 Mag case but stick with 223 now.

Note that Winchester designed the 350 Legend ctg such that you cannot use 223 brass to form it.
It has a slightly larger base diameter and a rebated rim down to the .223 rim.
HOWEVER, there has been a 35 caliber wildcat ctge based on the 223 brass that has been around for a while.

This sounds a whole lot like a rimless 256 Win Mag to me,,,,,,

I had a custom BSA Martini in 22 Ackley Jet that was a tack driver but a bit heavy. I also had a 17/222mg and it shot terrible on Rem 700 action. Ruger didn't make #3 in 357mg. but they did make a few #1 in 357mg.

My favourite 'walking rifle' is a Martini in 25/35, light, powerful and accurate.

I do a bit of walk abouts and have for years. My rifles for such are most often my Winchester M70 XTR or my Contender Carbine both chambered in .223. I shoot mostly jacketed bullets in them but, if small game is on the menu, carry some cast loads also.

Sometimes, if shooting mostly cast bullets, I swap out the 223 Contender Carbine barrel for a 30-30 barrel. Then I have Lee 90 gr SWCs at 800+ fps, 311316s at 1500 fps and 311041s at 1950 fps to use on what ever the target is.

Of course I use other rifles as well but those are the two that fit closely into your criteria.

I once had a Savage model 24 in .30-30 over 20 ga which I used on many long wanders in AZ. Unfortunately it was one of many that was stolen when my home was burglarized.

I have a pretty decent Jeffrey Rook Rifle that I had to re-line and rather than go to the expense of the original 255 Jeffrey we did it in 25-20. I have to load it lighter than the 25-20 WCF and it's quite accurate out to 100 yards but, I hardly consider it my walking around rifle. For years I took a daily walk around our 36 acres and nearly always reached for my Theime & Schlegelmilch drilling in 16 X 16 X 9.3 X 75R Nimrod into which I had installed a 22LR Einstecklauf in the right shotgun barrel. I had whatever I needed all the time. It's still the one I reach for when just woods loafing.

For a small case you could either make from .223 brass or just buy Starline, consider the 7.62x25 in a rifle, and then throat it long to permit seating 150-grain rifle bullets out long. John Taylor did one for me using a Remington 722 in .222 Remington as the donor rifle. Fitted a 20 inch .30 cal. barrel, used Manson 7.62x25 CIP reamer, standard CIP throat takes Accurate 31-155D cast bullet seated out or M80 pulls seated to crimp knurl. Shoots well with ordinary handgun ball ammo too.

We did not bother fooling with the mag to get it to feed, instead put in solid Hunter Benchrest type single-shot loading tray, just drop in a loose round, close the bolt to gobble it up. Requires slight opening of bolt face, John fitted Sako extractor. Like the rifle alot. Here are some pics and velocity data:

One of my favorite woods walk rifles is my Orig Win M/92 rifle, cal 44WCF.
Very light to carry, accurate with Lyman tang peep- "Cloverleafs" at 75 yards with
load of 22 gr 4227 under Lyman 429434HP. Velocity 1340fps from the 24" barrel.
Shot my second last deer with it.

If it were me I'd go for the CZ carbine in .223. If not confined to those two I'd go for an AR platform, either pistol with arm brace or minimum barrel length carbine.

I love my Savage Axis HB in .223 but it is set up for distance and weighs in about 9lb now

I'd not bother with a wildcat unless I found one of the really short actions, like a Remington Fireball.
