    45/70 kill

I built a blind one my place this summer, it's about 20 feet off of the ground. Yesterday was the opening day for antlered deer and along about 8:00 two bucks came right up to my stand. A single shot with my 45/70 and a cast bullet in the neck and it was all over except for the skinning and cutting up. Nice big fork horn mule deer, had about an inch of fat all over him. Should be great eating! At 75 years old that is what I want, not horns. Saw ten deer total, four bucks and six does and fawns. The Miller and DeHaws single shot did great! Went out just a minute ago and found my bullet on the ground where the blood pool was. The bullet had expanded to .973 across the widest point, and still had the gas check on it! Still have a doe tag, and cow elk tag. If I get another deer will by pass the elk. The toolman.

Congrats. I'd try and get a little cow calf since you already have a tag and all.

Is Mule deer fat good eating, or do you trim it off? Whitetail fat is not so an inch of fat just makes butchering harder.

Congrats on the fork horn and you are fortunate to have a Miller/ De Haas single shot rifle.
They didn't make many of them.

It can be. I killed a fatty buck a couple years ago that was hanging out in some agg fields. His meat was marbled like beef and he was excellent eating.

Will trim most of the fat off when I start cutting it up. Going to let it age for a few days in the fridge. Thanks everyone.

I was shooting the Lyman 45-300 grain flat nose gas check bullet, with a load of 21 grains of 2400, With one square of tipi paper on top of the powder. Have used that load for the 45/70 for about 50 years. Lots of smack down for not too much recoil. I don't think I have ever shot one through the crono, but I think it would be about 1300 fps. Cut about half of him up this morning, will get the rest of him in the freezer tomorrow.

Awesome that is about as good as it gets. Hunting your land and making a kill with your boolit and your load. Something deeply satisfying about that.
