    Cast for 300 winmag

A friend was asking if I would help him cast. He wants to know if there is mold that Lee makes that would work and how fast to push it. For hunting and to punch paper.

    Thanks guys.

No more than Lee molds cost, I'd get the heaviest .30 cal one they have and try it.
I wouldn't push it any faster than other cast due to leading & such.

The Lyman book has a page or two on it.
You should end up with something along the lines of a full house factory loaded .30-30 or a little better.

If it doesn't work out, you'd at least have a good mold for .30-06 and probably .308.

I use the Lee C309-170F with excellent results in the 300 Win Mag. I use A5744 powder to push it to @1950 fps with outstanding accuracy. If the rifle is scoped he will likely need to re-adjust zero, no big deal.

For very little more money you can get a mold from Accurate that is super for paper punching. It is # 31-175B for 1700-1800 fps. Faster may need a gas check and was one of the most accurate Eagan light 30 clones.

I used 311041 and AA5744 to harvest a few deer with my 300WM.

I did testing with 220gr, accurate 31-220LG, did mostly paper patch cause it worked a bit better than gas check. best accuracy was 1900fps, over 2k it decides to be a shotgun. and this is with hunting soft alloys. I used 38.1gr h4895 and 51.5gr h4831 for the same 1900 speed. both of these had 1gr of polyfill pillow stuffing over the powder.

Like others said... any moderately heavy .30 cal bullet from a decent mold THAT FITS YOUR CHAMBER AND BORE should shoot fine so long as your pressure and velocity is held to about 30.30 levels... That is, 1700-1900 FPS.

I love 300WM and I love casting but I've never mixed those two. I use 300 WM for long range accuracy work and shoot 300-500 meters regularly. Easy with J-bullets and full power loads.

Enter cast below 2000 fps as suggested:

What kind of 300 WM loads can keep the bullet below 2000 fps, safe? What powders? I've only done subsonics with fast pistol powders.

The NRA did an experiment with paper patched cast in the 300 WM and got good accuracy at full jacketed velocities. I've done paper patching, it is doable but it is a lot of work.

If I was venturing into this, I would try heavy coated bullets. Starting with minimum loads of normal powders, not less.

300 WM has generally been quite accurate to me, almost everything shoots MOA @ 100. But I have no cast experience here.

    Something like this:

The 300WM has a very short neck and throat. It's usually not too much of a problem with jacketed bullets, but my guess is that boolit is likely going to have to be seated very deeply into the case. Not only that, but it would more than likely be too long to feed through the magazine. I would opt for a lighter and shorter boolit, and one that fits the throat correctly. If you have a long freebore, go for it.

Waiting to hear on group sizes. Tried j words in my 375 RUM and groups were car sized at 100 yards with trail boss powder. The velocities I ladder tested were between 1,100 to 1450 FPS with 230 grain speers. I couldn’t hit a barn if I were locked inside of it. It finally started holding groups when velocities approached 2700 FPS. I believe some of the magnum caliber twists just won’t stabilize a slow bullet/boolit.

Yes,the reasonable way to shoot 30-30 loads is to use a 30-30.

Here is a 220 Lapua Scenar-L. It is long. Tikka T3 Tactical magazine restricts long OAL loading. But my friend shot under 2" (46mm) five shot group @ 600 meters with these using my magazine-OAL reloads. 2620 fps.

    .

To do that with cast, my abilities would take another lifetime and then some.
