    Winchester model 70 ranger...30-06

I have my dad's old Winchester ranger model 70 in 30-06..
Pop said it's time you started shooting it.
He's 84 .. and I think it's getting a little bit more than he can handle..?
He still shooting an old Stevens single Barrel 16ga..
    Hummmm ?
Anyway, the old ought-six ranger model has been a good rifle for this family since 64'
No telling how many deer have fallen to it.
    Utterly reliable.
    And accurate.
    One good gun.

Trying to figger out how to post a pic ?
Yes, shot the old girl today Hornady 150 grainers.
And like always.. about an inch or so at a hundred.
I've shot pop's rifle most of my life.
He bought it new in 1964 in clairmore Oklahoma.
I was just a little kid.. but I do remember him being happy as a clam with it.
Has a older Bushnell 4 power scope on it.
    It also has iron sights.
    Blind magazine.
    Push feed.
    Utterly reliable.
Nothing fancy about it at all.
But it's been one heck of a great rifle.
Hopefully she'll stay in the family forever.

It is nice to hear about a good rifle being kept in the family and used. I have no idea what will become of my guns.
My daughters don't have any interest and I have no sons.
My nephews are a long ways away from me and I don't know if any of them care about guns.

This is in response to Tazman's post. I asked one of my SIL of he wanted to have any of my guns. he said a rather enthusiastic YES. So when I get my will done Ill tag the ones he gets. As for the other SIL he's a Sgt with a police dept and always has his face in his I pod. I'll get a bag of coal for him. He never called me at all even though I asked his wife to tell him to do so. 5 minutes after coming over all 4 are in the couches ipods in hand. WWIII could start and they wouldn't even know until the first bombs would fall. And no one sits in my recliner. That has been made perfectly clear. Frank

I have one grandson who is 10 years old who I would not let handle a loaded firearm even with me standing next to him. He makes spontaneous bad decisions and has an anger problem.
My other grandsons are too young to tell yet as they are 3 and 5 years old. I will need to wait a while to see how they turn out.
Neither of my son-in-laws have shown any interest in firearms that I know anything about and I am pretty sure I would have known. I trained both my daughters in firearm usage when they were young and before boys became their focus.

Two nephews here on the ranch and they like their guns. One is a newbie handloader and the other is interested in doing so as well. I do not think either will aspire to casting though.

When my collection of stuff goes to them they will be a bit overwhelmed to say the least as it goes on top of what they all have by then.

Sometime last year, my granddaughter was talking to her mom and said, "I just realized that eventually I will get your guns, dad's guns, Grandpa Mickey's guns, and grandads guns." That girl will eventually have quite an arsenal. She has learned to think ahead.

I started the conversation with my daughter about guns and her children. We didn't get very far with it but it wasn't negative. There are possibilities there at least.

My son is just as enthusiastic a gun collector and reloaded as me... thank goodness. He will get the bulk of my guns. I do have a couple of great nephews that expressed a strong interest in reloading and rifles. When they were around 10 years old, I asked their mother about giving them a 22 rifle for Christmas. She was not in favor of it and really didn’t want them around guns. I asked her if she wanted them to find out about guns from their school and neighborhood buddies or from me. She called me the next day and said I was right, it would be much safer for them to learn in a structured environment than experiment with their friends gun in their bedroom.

They are now twenty something years old and are safe shooters and hunters.

    .

I'm glad your Dad saw fit to give you his cherished rifle, buckweet !

And, yes - as we age (myself included), we tend to lose our enthusiasm for heavy and heavy-recoiling firearms.

I long ago got rid of my 12ga shotguns and big bore CF rifles & handguns in favor of milder-shooting, but still effective, guns.

I didn't wait to die, before I passed on some of my firearms - giving all my children and their children their pick of as many of my firearms (I had a LOT) as they wished, so I could get to actually see them enjoying their inheritance while I could.
