Ran across this scope at a recent Gun Show. It is marked:
ALEXANDER MARTIN
BARR & STROUD LTD
RIFLE SIGHT
TYPE G.U.3. NO 146
The tightening screws on the mounts are marked "PARKER-HALE-MADE IN ENGLAND-" around the circumference. It looks to be of low power; maybe 2 or 2-1/2.
It has patches of rust on the outside, but much of the bluing is still there. I got the screws on the mounts loosened with Kroil and the set screws on the knurled rings towards the front of the scope loosened, but the rings themselves don't move. I'm afraid to gunk up the inside of the scope with penetrating oil. The crosshairs aren't quite centered. There look to be windage screws in the rear mount.
Does anybody know what this is? The seller said it was a "British Machine Gun Sight." I'd appreciate any info on what the knurled ring(s) are supposed to do. How is the elevation adjusted? The rear eyepiece also has knurling, but won't turn either; is this supposed to be the focus or parallax adjustment?
Stroebel's scope book and Shore's and Hesketh-Pritchard's English sniping books don't seem to mention or show anything like this scope sight.
