New Nasty Prank to Watch Out For!

The prankster puts the gasoline nozzle back in the pump holder locked open! If the next unsuspecting pump user selects the fuel grade before placing the nozzle in their tank, or removes the nozzel from the holder before releasing the hold open, gasoline shoots from the nozzle when you select the fuel grade! Caught it twice this week! The first I nearly drenched myself in fuel!

    Be aware!

Just people not paying attention to what they are doing when they put it back.

They probably paid in advance for less gas than it takes to fill their tank. Pump stopped, they put up the nozzle and didn't think to trip the hold open.

I have not been at a self pay that let you advance to pick your fuel if the valve was open. [ no pressure sensed downstream.] It must be a southern thing because it isn't a MT thing.

That is why they don't have the nozzle lock here.
I've even seen people getting scolded, because they put the gas cap in to hold the pump handle open.

Had that happen to me, but i caught it. In defense of the prior user, the latch/lock was a bit wonky to unlatch.

One of my pet peeves is stations that fail to maintain their stuff and the auto shut off fails to work. I'm not talking about a little bubble over, but rather a gush of fuel and the nozzle still doesn't shut off until I shut it off.

    Dangerous stuff.

I hate pay at the pump and the printer is out of paper. I almost think they let the paper run out to get you to walk in and buy junk food and cigarettes.

Weird, I had that on my last fill.
I figured it was done by accident by previous customer.
I always put the nozzle in the car before I am pushing buttons, so no surprise for me.

Last time I was in Hawaii, I noticed it and thought it was just that pump. Now I know it is a thing. And yes, I used the gas cap to hold the pump handle open. I didn't know we aren't supposed to. The handle did shut off the valve when the tank was full.

I used to see that a lot years ago.

I thought it went away like unscrewing the lids on restaurant salt & pepper shakers.

I've had this happen many times with diesel pumps at truck stops. Care to guess how fast fuel comes out of a high flow diesel pump? Got caught once and had to park and go take a shower before learning my lesson on checking the handle. It has happened enough that I think it's more of a case of people clicking the handle open, filling up till it stops and just replacing the handle on the pump because they are in a hurry, talking on the phone or generally not paying attention.

If you use a frequent fueler card from Shell it not only gives you 5 cents off every gallon you get the receipt emailed to you automatically. Maybe some other frequent fueler cards can be set up like that but I don't know on that one.

I thought NJ was going to change that law? First time I pumped my own gas in NJ, I think it was the Pilot in Cranberry, I jumped out and started in and the guy came running over like I was fixing to murder someone. We both laughed and he told me that most out of staters on the way through do the same thing.
