OK to Shoot Thin PC Coat?

    Hi All,

First thanks for all your expertise regarding powder coating! I've just started down this road and actually had some success with the Lee TL356-124-2R using powder I got from Smoke. Shot them out of my Glock 22 with 9mm conversion barrel as well as my Walther P1 and had no leading at all for a change!

However, the container I used to shake up the bullets/powder/BB's was a little small so I found another in the garage that looked the same, although it didn't have the #5 recycling mark. I followed the same process I used before (swirl 30 sec, up and down 30 sec, in the oven at 400 for 20 min after I see melting starting, quench after getting them out of the oven) and after I got them out of the water bucket I can see the coating is thin in places. I mashed a couple with a hammer and there is no flaking. Looks like a good coating , just thin in small spots.

So I'm wondering, would it be OK to shoot with some of these thin spots? Any test I can run short of loading a few and shooting them and seeing whether I'm getting leading?

    Thanks for all your help!

As long as its shiny (that's the clear base ) you will be fine.
Bare lead will be dull. Even smalls amounts of bare spots generally cause very little problems IF the other coating does/will not flake
AFTER passing the smash test I suggest you shoot 5 to 10 and check bore. If good increase to 15 to 20 and on and on

Many thanks for the quick reply Smoke. There is definitely a shiny layer over the entire boolit. I'll load a few and test.

That’s why I switched to smokes clear PC. The spotty look is eliminated.
