    45 Super Carbine

Hey guys I am starting a project and wanted to share. My kids have enjoyed (and been successful) hunting with a H&R Handi Rifle in .357 and I wanted one in .45 acp. The only thing I could find was a barrel insert for 12ga shotguns. Well we picked one up and after multiple different loads at acp levels i decided to move into plus p and super levels because of the amount of support on the case head. after contacting the manufacturer and finding that the same barrel blanks are used for acp as are for 45-70 and 44 mag I began to develop some loads. Here is the case head support.

Plenty of support as long as you can still use your thumbnail as the Extractor, you'll be fine.

The cases come right out. There is literally zero case showing and we have seen no sign of over pressure. There has been a little primer flow but that seems to be from the large firing pin and hole. Click image for larger version.

Here are the muzzleloader rounds we tried with 13gr of 2400 and their primers on the left. They were averaging 1240 fps. Click image for larger version.

Then we tried some Nosler 230gr JHP's with the 13 gr 2400 load. Next up was 185 XTP with 13gr of HS-6 for an average velocity of about 1680 fps. A couple went north of 1700! accuracy was good until the barrel would torque around.Attachment 249015Attachment 249016

Now I need to get the throat reamed for some heavy cast boolits! If anyone has a idea on reaming let me know.

If that shotgun is aluminum framed; keep an eye on the steel firing pin bushing for setback as you increase your loads. Iron frame(H&R) are good to .44 mag level; you're in uncharted waters if the frame of that folder is alloy.
Just a thought- love the project!

Pretty scary thought, one of your hot cartridges making it's way into a 1911.

I went the turned and locktite-ed liner rout on an old HR topper in 20ga. Bought the barrel blank off ebay for cheap, and to my surprise the quality was very good. Except that it needed a throat reaming, I picked a hand reamer up off brownells and it worked fine, just go slow, clear chips often, and use lots of lube. I sized down some 330 grn gould boolits for the 4570 to 452 and sent them. Accuracy was as good as anything else. Nice thing about the long throat is that you can make 45acp loads that will never fit in a 1911.

Perhaps something similar could work with the 45ACP case.

I like your idea and results. I made a .45 ACP chamber adapter a while back but, have only shot Tula .45 ACP factory in it so far. It shot good out of a H&R 158 Topper with sights on it. I also made a .357 Mag. adapter and shot some 185 gr. cast handloads and some 158 gr. jacketed handloads in it.

What kind of accuracy are you seeing? I have a 16" rifled .45acp adapter for my .30-30/ 20 ga combo. But really have never gotten it out to play with it.

In theory I could test it at my local pistol range. But the rifle range says shotguns and pistols are stricktly forbidden.

There is an "Open" unsupervised range but its some 25 miles away. Maybe I just need to take a drive out into the country some day.

Did H&R ever make an aluminum framed break barrel shotgun? I've never seen nor heard of one.
The only options I'm aware of are iron or alloy steel, not aluminum. The iron ones are good for .44 Mag, .357 Mag, .30-30, .45-70, .22 Hornet etc. The steel ones are good for full power rifle cartridges like .308, .270 etc.

I understand just wanting to do something, but in this case why did you want this solution vs buying a .44mag or .45lc barrel, both of which are readily available?

I love the idea but Altho I have tried a few none ever gave proper useable accuracy. As a plinker or last ditch. OK...

A 45 SUPER is a nice caliber! Your PAST “super” ballistics, heck you might be past ;5 Grizzly ballistics!! That would shoot a 260 about 1600 as I remember..

Good thoughts about that shotgun receiver and the pressure and back thrust your generating

Evilbay, was not that expensive either. Also instead of a single O-ring near the breach. It has 3 slots at the breach, 3 at muzzle, and 3 in middle.
You decide how firm it needs to be.

I just looked on evilbay, nothing available longer than 8" and the guy I got mine from no longer has anything for sale. Which I find is a little interesting and dismaying.

    Looks like short lane has an 8" pathfinder for around 100$;

After 10 minutes of actively browsing evil bay I found nothing longer than 8" and they were all short lane products. Lots of shorter.

Eventually I found a web page for Chazel where he lists his long 16" rifled adapters for 100$.
It appears he just got run off of evilbay.

    https://chaszel.com/product/12-gauge...mber-reducer/#

I make no claims for anything about this guy. Except that he does make a mucn LONGER chamber adapter. Seems to be reasonably priced. IE twice the length for the same price as a Short Lane.

I have bought 3 from him, was pleased with what I got, how quickly it arrived. If there was anyhing hinky about him I would not have posted his link.
Still that is not the same as a reference which I am not prepared to make at this point.

He has a wide variety of products.

    https://chaszel.com/product/12-gauge...mber-reducer/#

    Hope this helps.
