    M1A - Getting closer

I have been working with a RCBS 30-150 with a Springfield Armory M1A. Last week, I tried it with the Lyman 311299 and 27.5gr of H4895 with a tuft of Dacron. The velocity was 1852 fps with a SD of 11.9. I went to the range this evening and got about the same group. Groups were off of a bench at 100 yards.

I am also using H4895, 27 gr. with an NOE 150gr. bullet. Shoots ok with iron sights, I will be mounting up a scope soon, hope to shrink those groups. Wanting to bang steel at 400yds. My groups look similar to yours. I have tried several powders, but keep coming back to H4895.

    Very good.

I shoot a fair amount of cast in mine and the groups look very similar.

Something that helped me a lot:
I'm too tight to buy NM sights, so I took off the front sight blade and filed it to be much thinner.
With the large hole issue rear sight, it takes a fraction longer to get good sight alignment,
but the thinner front blade doesn't cover so much of the bullseye and helped shrink the groups will all types of ammo.

There is a sticky by Bruce B on the M1a, you can save a lot of trouble and effort by reading it.

.............You guys experiencing any issues with leading in the gas system? I have a SA stainless loaded (NM bbl and sights) / walnut stock I bought about 9 months ago, but have been hesitant to shoot lead through it.

I have shot 400 cast rounds through a 308 m1a Clone with out cleaning it ... with out a problem

then got caught out in the rain ... then cleaned it

what i did notice is the gas switch was very stiff ... maybe a drop of cleaner/ oil and a turn or two every couple of hundred rounds would help

Mine is a rack grade Springfield.

Not sure how many hundred cast boolits I've fired in it.
Awhile back, I took out the gas piston to clean it for the first time because I felt guilty for never doing it.

It had plenty of soot in there, but no Lead.

I haven't had any issue with leading. I do get quite a bit of carbon build up though. It cleans up fairly easily with the sadlak drill set. I have read BruceB's sticky. I tried about 3 different weight boolits between 150 and 180 before I went back with the 311299. Just posting what worked for me.
