    WTT/WTB Lyman 358439 Hollow Point Pin

    Looking to buy or trade for a hollow point pin for an early Ideal/Lyman 358439 mould. I received it second hand in a box of parts and I'm just itching to cast some bullets with it. I believe (but not sure) all the .358 HP Mould pins were the same. I also don't know if the current production moulds are the same or not.

    Before I get a half a dozen replies/PM's... Yes I know I can get a new one made by Eric, but I'm not ready to go that far yet.

    I'm fairly certain there's someone with a drawer full of pins from wrecked dies that are looking for a good home. The wooden handle can even be beat up or missing, I can deal with all that with my limited shop.

    Give me the length of the diameter needed may have one for you. It's from an early ideal pistol molds but I don't know which one.

    I have made them using a drill press, brass rod, and a file. Not the easiest solution but cheap and works.

    And just as a curiosity, there were different pins used in different moulds. I have a stepped pin in a mould labeled 358429 and a tapered pin in a 359439.

    Harry, thanks for the reply. My basic measurements are as follows:

    The drill rod that seems to fit the mould thru hole measures .0155

    I’m not sure where the hollow is supposed to end but the base of the tapered nose portion is .890 from the base of the mould. The crimp groove is 1.00 so my gestimate puts the length of the hollow point pin somewhere around .900 or thereabouts.

    At this point I’ll go for anything close.....

    I have this mold . It's yours for $50,00 shipped. It's a nice single cavity ideal with vent lines and hollow point pin.

    Is that .0155 or .155?
    .155 almost 5/32(.15625) a standard diameter rod(or drill).
    .0156 = 1/64.

    kywoodwkr, yes, my zeros and dots are a bit out of wack. The thru hole is around .155.

    Not sure where HARRY got off to, I figure he will be back around in a bit

    DGV I’ll keep your offer in mind, I want to try and get this one running first.

    In the mean time I’m still on the hunt.

    Probably a .156" pin. Seems like Lyman stuck with standard size drill rod. Most of mine are .156". Takes about 45 minutes to make one with an electric drill, a flat file and some knobs from Walmart's hobby section. Pin extends into the cavity 1/2 the length of the bullet. An E clip from Ace Hardware acts as a stop under the screw on the bottom. Hacksaw blade to make the e-clip groove. PM me if you want more directions./beagle
