    Win. Model 54

Can anybody tell me what cartridges were factory chambered in the Winchester model 54? I am looking at one at what seems a very good price but have never heard of the model 54 being chambered in the 30WCF (30-30).

This seems like an unlikely chambering in a straight boxed mag well. The rimmed case would need to be staggered and canted up in the front it seems to feed well.

Anyway, this would be a wonderful chamber if first it is a stock chambering and second a working combo in a fine bolt gun such as the model 54.

While not the most common ctg. the 30-30 was one of the offerings. 30-06 & 270 were the most common. There were a very few 25-35 made also.

Thanks. I have my grandfathers 54 in 270 win. But had never heard of a 30 WCF chamber. Thanks for the reply.

Next question, anyone have one and shooting it?

As far as I've heard, the 54 could be had in 25-35, .257 Roberts, 7x57, .270, .30-30, 30- 06 and some more metrics.
A couple of members here have that combo- lucky dudes.

I have a 30WCF. Great gun shoots like a dream and will take a hotter reload than the levers. No feeding problems, had a hornet also once and no feeding problems either. If you find one get it.

There were 10 different factory offerings at one time or another:

    .22 Hornet
    .220 Swift (1935/1936)
    .250-3000 Savage
    .257 Roberts (1935/1936)
    .270 Winchester
    7x57mm Mauser
    7.65x57 Mauser (1929-1936)
    .30-30 Winchester
    .30-06 Springfield
    9x57 Mauser (1929-1939)

Nice. I missed the 54 chambered in 30 WCF. Think it was choice too. Under 700 dollars! Ho hum ... win some, lose some.

What makes the 54 in 30-30 work is the slanted sheets of metal inside the magazine. That and instead of a single feed ramp like on the M70 and Mausers the one for 30-30 is a double feed ramp one for both the right and left hand side of the feed ramp.the two a separated by no metal being removed from the center of the feed ramp. "The thrill of victory... and the agony of defeat" Do we really need them/another, but I really, really want one of those! Have been lurking to pounce for years.
Being I am an admitted M70 Looney, those 54's do not surface often and when they do they are either stupid money, neglected or both. Guess that's why they call it hunting!

It's #1 on the list of 30-30 bolt action rifles to have, #2 is the Remington 788 and #3 is everything else (Savage or custom made) IMO.

I had a 54 in 30/30 and at the time had no use for it. I also had a couple 788s in 30/30 and Savage 340s I don't know how many I've owned. Back when I had them I had no interest in 30/30s let alone a BA. I was busy with the latest mega blasters on the market. I got interested in 30/30 cartridge and got to making up some hot loads in light and spitzer bullets. Was using a Savage 219 for test rifle and sent quite a few guys away talking to themselves. They had low opinion of 30/30 just like I did when I was young. If I ever get a 788 cheap I'm going to form 30/30s out of 375win brass and see what the top end is. The 54 Win is a very nice rifle. It would be the Cadillac of 30/30s but I wouldn't use one as a test gun, for that reason.
