    Remingtom 552

Have a chance to get one.
Not sure how old it is, or the condition.
    Never had one.
    Seems ok.
    Any thoughts on them????

I had one a while. It would fire out of battery. They have a long tapered nose on the front of the bolt. Get a little crud in that tapered area and it'll fail to close all the way. If it's enough crud, but not too much, it'll fire out of battery. The local gunsmith said it's common for them. Tried just keeping it clean but the issue persisted.

Other than that I liked the rifle. Fed anything I gave it, and was accurate.

    Get it.
I've got two. My dad's old ADL grade, and the first BDL one I ever saw. I've killed more game with it than any other firearm I own, with the possible exception of my 870.
A friend and I were sitting in the swamp one day trying to see how far we could kill a squirrel with mine. We stopped when we found we were dropping them so far we were having trouble finding them.....

I've never owned one but have tinkered with several of them, some were reliable and some not. Semi auto's tend to get dirty and the 552 is a little hard to clean. The trigger group has to be dropped out to access the bolt. One I cleaned was completely full of powder fouling leaving only room for moving parts, it had finally quit.

I have one and love it. Never had a problem with it.
I bought it a long time ago was looking for an adult sized 22 seems most are for kids, and I'm a fairly big guy.

A friend got 1 back in the early `60`s. He regularly shot about a `brick` of Remington Golden .22`s at a session of about a week apart. It was accurate and reliable till it got old and worn. Finally in the late `70`s he retired it as it was too iffy reliable.Robert

In 35+ years of gunsmithing, I have had a lot of them with the cleaning issues. I have also had 12 of them with broken firing pins/bolts, one or both. Usually if the firing pin broke, and they snapped it a few times, the bolt tip would break, don't know why. I replaced them and they worked fine. All except one, it would jam if it was squeaky clean, new extracors, ejectors, every thing checked out fine, just would jam about every 4th or 5th round, did worse on the Rem. golden bullets.

My mentor as a youth had one and he swore by it. I still remember the shell deflector was missing on it but it still had the screws there. Remington made them for quite a long time so they can't be all bad.

I got a used, beat to heck ADL about 30yrs ago. Stripped it down, cleaned everything. Put it back to together.
Shoots great, put a red dot sight on it. The stock sights were thrashed .
I had to get the little sheet metal things that holds the forearm to the mag tube. Same as the ones for my 572BDL.

I shoot it at the indoor pistol range as the red dot makes it easy to see the 25yrd. 1 inch target stickers.

Fifteen rounds into less than an inch at 25yds. Standing up on my hind legs and shooting like a man.

But I due avoid shooting wax-coated lead bullets.
    I HATE auto-correct

Happiness is a Warm GUN & more ammo to shoot in it.

My Experience and My Opinion, are just that, Mine.

So it came home with me.
Little rust for not being used for a long time.
    Probably needs a good cleaning.
Kind of like a Winchester I have.
Charging handle on the left side.
Not sure how old it is.
Can't find a serial number on it.
Any idea where it would be????

Most Remingtons have a date code on the barrel just forward of the receiver on the left side, the list can be found online. I don't know if the 552 had a number before 1968.

Most people that are not gun people think you buy one and it needs no maintenance, don't own a cleaning rod or a bottle of oil. They are also afraid to take them apart and gripe when it quits. I've seen more nice guns ruined by neglect than were ever worn out.

Mine has a the serial number on the left side of the receiver. Dad's (pre '68) does not have a serial number I can find.

The daughter is back at Miramar MCAS, about to go back to the Middle East......

She says Hawaii was nice for a while, but she was ready to be somewhere she could drive more than 30 miles in any direction!

I've lived here all my life, but I can relate to that.
Just not many places to go, to get away from it all.
It's worse now with tourist all over the place.

She was there for three years and really enjoyed her time there. Bowhunted hogs in the mountains and spearfished on the reefs every chance she had. Visited every island by helicopter, including some of the really remote ones. Every picture she sent back looks like a postcard!

    Numbers under the patent number.........
    2.751.702-2.815.602
No other numbers on the left side of the barrel.
    Only letters........
    WVWJ
    Model is 552. No letters.
    Has the shell deflector.

Just looked at my Winchester 77.
    It's almost the same.
I wonder if someone copied the other.
