    22 cal VLD heavies!

Just cut the first die with a new 12.25s secant ogive 22 cal VLD reamer! It is a near match to the Sierra 90 grain match king profile.

Also cut a rebated boat tail core seat die for it too. I don't believe rebated is any better or worse then traditional boat tails but it looks like it will turn out well.

Also got a traditional 9 degree 22 cal boat tail that is a bit longer then my standard offerings. This one extends down to a diameter of .155" vs. the previous .187"

Should make for some very good, heavy long range 22 cal bullets!

I'll have some pics and updates soon. I'm almost done with my annual burnout of machining a new supply of dies.

    Good shooting and swage on!

Broke the new boat tail reamer.... only had 4 more dies to go! Got another one on the way. Sucks when you break these expensive reamers.

Look out for a old tool and cutter grinder... I just got a surface grinder and a spare T&C for about 2200 in yanky money at a bankruptcy auction... And they were not Chinese junk either...

Customer wanted to make a heavy 22 cal bullet with Sierra Match King nose and RBT boat tail.

Here is what I came up with for him

I was just testing the dies, here is a 110 grain on the left and a 100 grain on the right. The 22mag case used for a jacket on the right still had room for another 10 grains.

Ideally I think the 22 mag jacket length needs to be trimmed a little shorter to allow the customer here to make his 85-95 grain bullets he desires but it is certainly impressive to see what can be done with a long jacket and a set of swage dies

I wish i could get a supply of 22 mag brass... Dont know anyone who shoots the stuff.... You can reload 100 x 222Rem for the same cost as two boxes of 22mag here in Oz

    BT,
They look great. Did you redraw the copper jacket? What was the steps for the 22mag? What was the jacket length? I’m using 1.060 making 88.8 RBTs

That was a Hines tactical 6mm jacket drawn down. I just tried a few of the Sierra 6mm jackets that start at .810" and end up at 1.120" after draw to 22 cal, they worked perfect for 80-95 grain bullets.

The 22 mag is long at 1.250" in length after drawn down to 22 cal.

    1. derim in 6mm derim die
    2. anneal and clean (of course)
    3. draw down in 22 derim die or actual 6mm-22 cal jacket draw die.

I think the jacket needs to be a little shorter for bullets in the 85-95 grain range.

Sierra 6mm .810" jacket drawn down to 22 cal

80 and 90 grain 22 cal RBT bullet made from this jacket. The 90 grain was a bit too much lead core for this jacket so it didn't quite point up all the way. Still pretty good looking bullets.

will these be available for swapping internals in your 22 cal swaging set or only as finished dies? wonder how good they would be shot subsonic?

The way I have machined and designed these dies is for the boat tail to be formed in the core seat die. The boat tail shape is machined into the body of the die, this makes a better set up then attempting to machine internal removable parts, I've tried so swapping internals is not an option I offer but I do offer the necessary dies to allow for making boat bullets.

I'll look into it a bit more though, the traditional boat tail doesn't work with a removable internal punch that form the boat tail because the edges are so sharp and thin they get damaged, but the RBT may work better because there are no sharp edges. Yet forming the RBT requires two core seat dies so we could possibly swap internals for the final RBT form but an additional boat tail die is needed to form the initial boat tail.......

I'll just have to post some pics, hard to explain, especially trying to type on small tablet.

How long are those bullets? And what twist to stabilize them? A friend played with 90 grn 22 cal bullets and needed 6.5 twist for them
