I shoot an old H&R 22. Special, which is a breaktop 9-shot revolver that has a 7" barrel and saw-handle grips. The empty cases are extracted and ejected in one smooth movement, just like a Webley revolver. Fun to shoot! It likes lead rn standard velocity .22lr, and given it's age I avoid HV and plated bullets. Those Aguila CB's also are fine in this old rig.

I had the same issue with a used .22LR Ruger Old Model bearcat I picked up for a song, a decade ago.

I did much the same as you did, and found some ammo (Federal bulk) that chambered & ejected freely - which I use exclusively in my specific gun.

    ..
Now I lay me down to sleep
A gun beside me is what I keep
If I awake, and you're inside
The coroner's van is your next ride
