    Odd RCBS shell holder issue...

I have these 2 shell holders, both came with a set of 32 acp dies. One is marked 7 and it appears to be close to correct, a little slop but works and the other is numbered 17 and looks much older. My charts show 17 as 303 Brit and such, but this is definitely not 303 Brit size. It is a little to sloppy on a 32 acp as one will damage the rim if the primer goes in with much force at all.

Any idea what my #17 really is designed to fit?

You misread your shell holder chart .
The 17 shell holder is for 30 Carbine and 32 ACP..

The shell holder for a .303 Brit is a 7. If your #7 does not fit a .303 then it is marked wrong.
My RCBS shell holder for the .303 is a 7 and I have been using it many years.

Their 1971 catalog shows #17 for 30 carbine and 32 ACP, #7 is for 44 Special.

Is your #7 marked RCBS around the rim?

The Lee #7 she’ll holder is for M1 and 32 ACP. Is it possible it’s a Lee shell holder?

The #7 looks like a lee shell holder, mine only have a number with no other markings and that beveled top.

My guess is the #7 isn't an RCBS item. Is there a brand stamped in the side of it?

Might also be a Hornady. I don't know if I have more than a couple of Lee's(came with die sets) but I have a few Hornady's and they sort of look like the #7 shown.

The Hornady #7 is for the .32-20 class of cartridges (.32-20, .25-20 & .218 Bee), so it would be too big for the .32 acp.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello mattw,

    I have in my list shell holder for 32 ACP, RCBS-17, Lyman-23, Redding-22, CH4D-M1, Hornady-22, LEE-7, Herters-5 or 15.

    Hope this helps, AntiqueSledMan.

Herter's #5 is normally for 223. That might be another approach to getting a tighter case fit.

Yup, typed without thinking... The 17 is supposed to be 32, but it will allow damage to the rims if the primer pockets are tight. The 7 could be a Lee, did not see it marked anywhere, just a number. It is a better fit for most 32 acp, some of the Euro stuff does not want to go into it due to differences in the extractor groove.

    Thanks for the replies.
