    The tighter group has a patch that’s .080 longer than the larger group

    Where did you put the extra .080? More tail? More ogive?

    I must say, the common wisdom is to patch no farther up the boolit than the ogive but some patched boolits I was given with a mold were patched way past and shot remarkably well.
    I wonder if a tiny bit of patch past the ogive makes for a quicker patch release.

    The reason I asked was, if you raised the patch higher on the ogive that you might have exposed more of the base. But what you show there looks good.
    I find keeping the patch right at the transition of the shank and the radius is where I get the best accuracy, but I see a difference in accuracy when the whole base of the bullet is covered, it falls off.
    Those small dimples are right at the end of the shank where I hold the patch.
    The thing is getting the alloy balanced so the bullet does not have to much obturation that the land cuts cut bare lead ahead of the patch destroying the accuracy.

    Here are three bullets with different hardnesses. The first is good the second is almost to soft and the third is to hard and the chance that it will loose rotation.

    When I patched up the bullet farther I made the patches longer to make up for it. I still might make them just a tad longer still. I am going to shoot the Shiloh into the pool tomorrow so we will see what happens and go from there

    . I will make a new thread this evening with more detailed notes of what all we tested but here are some more boolits that were shot into the pool. The bullet on the right was shot out of my c sharps highwall and the 2 on the left were out of the Shiloh. Like I suspected the Shiloh with its tighter bore was bumping up further than the highwall. We made the patches for the Shiloh another .040 long. Interesting to note before we started shooting the Shiloh I went to clean the oils out of it like usual and good bit of lead came out. So it looks like the .080 longer patches still are not long enough. We shot a few patches that were .040-.050 longer than the long patches that were shot previous and there was absolutely no leading. We also experimented on how much overlap on the base of the bullet was to much and that does seem to make a difference. The less overlap the better the bases seemed to be. I’ll up load some more pictures and the results of yesterday’s testing this evening.

    Any more testing on your patches ? I wanted to get a bunch of different patch configurations tested but too many obstacles so far. My patches with more overlap seemed to perform better at long range yesterday, but had other issues going on so wasnt a good test.

    This picture and the previous one with the three different alloy harnesses makes me think that nose slump may not be a real thing.
    Surely it would show up shooting into a pool!
    An optical comparator would sure be nice to look at the pre and post fired boolits.

    They were fired into the pool at full load. The nose bump up on the softer bullets is much more pronounced. Maybe instead of calling it nose slump a more correct term would be nose setback

    Man at the variables we have to deal with to make these shoot! It's great to see the results from bullets that haven't been dug out of a berm.

    What was your alloy for the "softer bullets"?
