    45 ACP coat or lube

My son wanted a SR1911 45 so now I have to load for a new caliber and get another mold. My question is, has anyone used the HI-TEK coating and went back to lube and sizing. Do most of you HI-TEK your regular lube groove bullets of get the newer molds that make the smooth bullets that make bullets just for coating? I have read a lot of the coating thread, but not all of it. so don't go easy on me.
    thanks

Lastborn, I use powder coat exclusively in both of my 1911`s and will never go back to either alox or wax lubed projectiles I use regular grease groove mould and coat it, haven't tried the smooth side moulds as mine work so well. I've bought and tried the HI tek coated bullets before but never tried the process as completely happy with PC.

By the way looks like your son has a good Dad !

    Cheers

    HITEK everything. groove, no groove.
The Lyman 230gn RN groove bullet loves HITEK... My Para 1911 loves HITEK too... super clean bore after 300 rounds.
    Hooroo.

I do some PC, mostly Hi-Tek. I coated around 2000 bullets yesterday and today.

Pc all the way in my 45acp, colt and carbine. Pc regular groove and tl grooved molds. The tl works very well in pistols, but hot loads in the carbine line more bearing surface of a traditional grooved bullet for accuracy. Shot thousands of commercial lead before I started casting, tl'd for a bit once I started pouring my own, but once I found pc, thats all I use now.

What is that lube stuff you talk about?? Seems I remember something about it in the history books.

Lastborn, I would highly recommend getting into powder coating. I got into PC in 2012 because I was shooting in a weekly IDPA match when Sandy Hook made the shelves bare for ammo & components. I had lot of powder & primers, but my 5K of bullets on hand went quickly. Since I had access to range scrap I got back into casting because of Powder Coating. I originally got away from casting because of the greasy mess of lubbing. Since getting into PC I haven't purchased a commercial bullet. If I didn't PC I would definitely not go back to lube.

I shoot primararly 9mm & 45 ACP handguns. If you are just starting out with a 45, I would suggest buying an H&G #68 4 cavity mold, which comes up for sale from time to time to PC. The old #68 will give you outstanding accuracy, feeding reliability and is easy to PC.

Lloyd, you're killing me! I have a Lyman lube-sizer that now belongs in a museum rather than on my bench Frank

I doubt I ever go back to grease based lubes again. I PC & HT, just depends on what I feel like that day. Both work fine reducing mess & smoke. I never bothered going away from my lube groove bullets, they work just fine coated & the option is always there to back to a lube if I had to, like SHTF.
