    damaged mold

So in the middle of an extended casting session mold up to temp and dropping nice , I got out of rhythm and swung the sprue plate closed before mold halves were shut and sliced a sliver out of top edge on a cavity , now it makes a nice fin on that cavity .

So now it is time to fire up the mill and do some cleanup , this will decrease the thickness of the bottom band so it will need work there also .Attachment 247517

I hate it when that happens.

I've never had that happen , maybe there is a upside to being slow .

Good luck with the fix , hope everything comes out square, plumb and level .

I've got an iron mould like that, it's just enough that sometimes it fins, but most of the time not. Problem is that it's a GC mould.

Well square plumb and level is what I am shooting for , going to make it a no lube groove at the same time , and going slow is fine , when I got out of time I was out of luck , going to work on a few other molds while the mill is set up and all my junk is off of it . This was a first time for this in my years of casting , and hoping the last.

A good welder with a tig or laser welder could fill that in then recut it. True braze night work also. A piece of carbon clamped to face then fill in the missing with hard braze and recut.

On a brass mold? I figure its like some other projects if I take them out the cost would be higher then what I might want to spend , though I am laughing as when I buy tooling and other items cost goes up , only wish I would have bought a mill and a lathe when I was younger and when my father was younger so he could have showed me and taught me
