I had some planted under my apple trees in New Hampshire. Dug and dug - it was basically all sand - and the roots were tangled with the apple tree roots. Thought it was hopeless, and then I planted some Artissima there and the horseradish died and never came back.

So, how does everyone grind it up?

He adds the vinegar t soon... kills the heat.

I have a mini food grinder for small batches, food processor for large. And it has to have salt in my book, no sugar though.

I've tried a blender before but it chops it up way to fine for my liking. I use a meat grinder and it leaves it just a bit more coarse. I grind about 5 minutes worth into a bowl and then add vinegar. Put that batch into jars/zip lock bags and then repeat.

The gentleman in the video said May was the best time to dig it up. I disagree with that. I've ground some in the middle of summer at it had good flavor but no heat. October/Novermber seams to work best for me.

I won't dig until October. Gets me past all the other garden canning I will have going on soon. Already been busty blanching and freezing green beans and just gave a friend a quart bag stuffed full of them. Need to get a head of cabbage too and get sauerkraut fermenting...

I plant mine in 10 inch terra-cotta drain tiles about 5 feet long

Fill with 50 % sand mixed with really good compost

Prop the (5 of them) against a shed wall thats gets rain drainage from the roof

plant 2 starts in each tube, water and stand back-----they really take off

end up in the fall looking like GIANT carrots with the bushy tops

to harvest, lay one down, wash out the sand/compost-------NO DIGGING---------clean straight pretty roots
