Star Sizer Disassembly question - Air Mod related

    MANY THANKS!! IT IS APART!!

Looking at doing the Air pressure feed mod on my 40+ year old Star Sizer. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out how things come apart, but the main compression screw and the top nut from the Lube Cylinder have me stumped.

The part I call a Pusher Button (in photos, below) appears to be a press fit on the end of the 5/8"-18 compression screw, but I'm not sure and I don't want to damage anything.

How do I go about getting the 5/8"-18 threaded screw out of the Lube Cylinder cap?

Looking again through this thread -

    http://castboolits.gunloads.com/show...ccessful/page2

    - I find reply #33 implies this is a press fit. I will try applying some heat and see what happens.

    Greetings

yes it is pressed in what i did to remove mine was to back the top nut up to the handle then placed in in between the jaws of a vice close the jaws just enough to catch the rim of the pusher button and them i held on to the nut and turned the handle closing until the posher button poped off.

Hope this helps and you understand what im trying to explain.

    John J:

Thanks much! Yes, think I've got it. Will apply a little heat and torque tomorrow and see what happens.

    Again, thanks!

I just made a new nut so the original wasn’t altered at all. I threaded the new nut for the press and threaded the hole in the center of the cap for a quick change air fitting. I added an O ring inside the cap, just sits there, to make the press to cap an air tight fit.

The lube plunger is aluminum with two o rings to seal against the cylinder side. There is also a threaded hole in the top so that a rod can be threaded in and the plunger pulled out.

Remove the top handle and thread the main nut off from the top.

cheese1566 - sorry - won't work. First thing I measured and it is the same height (5/8") as the thread tops.

However, input from others pointed me in the correct direction.

To close out this thread, here is a photo of the the disassembled parts. The collar is a very nicely machined pressed fit. A little heat and some dilligent tapping with small hammer and drift punch got the collar off the threaded rod.

Magma must have started to reduce the top. Both of mine came off that way.

Good to see you was successful!
