Lee 230 gr 30 al in the 30/40 Krag ?

Has anyone tried the Lee 30 cal 230 gr bullet designed for the 300 BLK in a 30/40 Krag?

I have shot some in a 30/30 Handy Rifle. They were not especially accurate but would be killers at short distance.

I tried it in a MN using a Beagled Mold.
It did well at lower velocities, but I was looking for something High Speed for long distance.
I haven't tried it in a .308 yet, but do intent to, but I will Powder coat them this time.

You won't find a better feeding bullet for a Krag than 311284. If I was going to shoot lead at Camp Perry, it would be 311284 or 311365. NOE's 311284 has a big enough nose for most Krag bores, which are generally .301 bore diameter. The original Lyman molds can sometimes run small, going by what I've read. I have one from NOE's first group buy, mics .303 on the nose.

The Lyman No.311284 (originally Ideal No.308284) was quite literally designed specifically for the .30-40 Krag. Accuracy tests conducted by Frankford Arsenal in June of 1905 concluded "Barlow's 200-gr. bullet with copper cup at base" to be the most accurate of at least seven different designs which were considered for "reduced range" (300 yards) cartridges, and was approved for use by unit armories in reloading cartridges for such.

Similar tests conducted in March and May of 1906, to develop a short or reduced range cartridge for the Model 1903 rifles (in their original Model 1903 chambering), again commented on the superior accuracy (to 600 yards) of the Ideal No.308284 over the several types examined.

Further tests by Frankford Arsenal between 1908 and 1912 (with the Model 1906 cartridge) likewise indicated the superb accuracy of No.308284, but as the range at which practice was to take place had been significantly decreased, a lighter, swaged design was adopted as the Gallery Practice Cartridge, Model of 1919.

You simply cannot go wrong with the Lyman/Ideal No.308284/311284 in either the Krag or the Model 1903.

I will give the 311284 a try, I have that mold.
Any good loads around 1800 to 1900 fps. my barrel is 25 inch.

311284 or the 311299 are my choices. 4227 or (if available) IMR 4759.

To stabilize the Lee bullet, you need at least a 1/9" twist(23cm.). Anything slower and it will tumble....................; look at your Greenhill!...................

The Greenhill formula is usually right, but not always. The Lee bullet design would be worth a try in a regular 1 in 10" .30-40 twist if you can shoot it fast enough.

I've seen best results, accuracy-wise from the Lyman #314299. I tried the popular #311284 many years ago. It was accurate in some limited testing, but the #314299 was a bit more accurate.

In my ‘customized’ 1898 Krag I have been using cast bullets made in a Redding #301 mold.
Sized to .309 and using 21.0 grains of Rx7.

Target barrel, 8.5" twist, chambered in 30 USA (30-40K). I have the Lee 230 as well as 311281 stop ring,
247 gr NOE, 308284 , 311299 AND Lyman 301620 PP bullets to work with.
I want to work with BP as well as 4759, Re7, Varget.

I'm guessing the answer is no!

I have 311284, 311299 and so on. I'm debating whether or not to spend the 26 bucks just for the experiment. I don't have a 30 BLK and am not inclined to ever get one.

My old 95 is my go to gun for most targets larger than prairie dogs out to 400 yards. The paper patched bullets are shellacked for weather and wear resistance. The Accurate Mold 215 grain bullet over 42 grains of Reloader 19 at 2300 fps is a real killer.
