New roller

For those that may be faint of heart, might just skip the rest of this posting.

I had a very pristine Shiloh Sharps 74 Hartford model chambered in the mighty 45-120 SS cartridge. This came my way years ago ( some may remember my trial with this rifle ). At any rate this beast barked my knuckles and kicked my clavical for the last time.

I found this 90's vintage (1990's) rolling block from the Remington custom shop. Seemed like a great price on GB sooo ... contacting the owner, I proposed a trade. He agreed and the trade took place.

Today I took possession of this very nice Remington roller. Man am I happy. This is indeed CUSTOM and a nice custom at that. Very nice figured wood on the pistol grip butt AND the metal tipped forearm. The tapered round 30 inch barrel is nicely balanced and the metal nicely blued. This set single trigger works very well.

Just real happy to have this modern made roller in 45-70 chamber and all in brand new shape ... maybe never fired in fact.

Pictures will follow as well as a range report. I have some KIK 2F 70 grain loads under Lee 459405 hollow base boolits and think this should be the first rounds thru this fine rifle.

I have several molds on hand for different weight boolits in .458, .459 and .460 diameter so the load development will commence once time shines on me with some extra bits.

That's my story. My big 120 days are behind me. And another 45-70 in the stable. And another Remington Rolling Block.

Now the only 74 Sharps in my stable is the first long range express from Pedersoli. 34 inch barrel and way funner then the big 3.250 chambered Shiloh.

So thar she blow's! I couldn't be happier. This rifle is everything I could have asked for.

The old ped rear vernier will work till I decide if it is going to get along with me. I also have a barrel mount full buckhorn that I will try and see if it agree's with my old eyes.

Have you worked with it enough to develop an opinion of that tang sight they put on the rifle? Anyone?

Very Nice, Rollers are surely fine rifles

Loading for them is just slightly different, in that you only have thumb force to chamber the round, have a quick fit check before you head to the range

Very nice Roller there. Will you stay with the front blade or change out to an aperture?

I shudder thinking about that 3.25" 45 you had! I cannot see it as being fun other than it being a Shiloh. Out of curiosity, was it a shotgun butt or the torture device?

Congratulations on your new rifle!
I'm sure that both of you will be happy with your trades.
Recent development work with my Danish Remington (essentially .45-70) leads me to believe that you made the right decision: The 405 grain bullet with a prudent load of 5744 was enough recoil for me.
I don't want to think what kind of recoil a .45-120 would have delivered with a gun of similar weight..

That is one fine looking rifle. I hope it shoots for you as good as it look!

I did the 45-120 thing 25 or more years ago. It was in a 12-13 lb. rifle so the recoil didn't put me off it....and back then I might have been a little masochistic when it came to recoil anyway. Never did get that rifle to shot very good. These days my 45-90 with a 480 gr. bullet is plenty. Nothing has ever walked away from it.

Thanks fella's. My decision to trade came from the years mounting having the Shiloh 45-120 setting in the safe.

The Shiloh had the shotgun butt. And yes it came to life with 135 grains of GOEX 2Fg powder under a 540 grain gubbermint boolit. I had 110 grain loads and 120 grains but as I could stand up to the beating ... the 135 grain load and the 458125 Lyman loaded with the first lube groove above the case mouth and engraving the rifling just a slight KISS is what it liked. Had to learn to do no anticipating the recoil to be able to shoot it half accurately.

That wrist mounted vernier is not what came on the rifle ... it is an old reworked Ped soul sight. Not very repeatable if moved ... but does well when adjusted and just shot.

The front will suffice for the time being. I have a Ped sight ... but wrong dovetail. MVA sells an adjustable hooded sight for around 135 dollars as I recall.

Chill's, the wood is spectacular. It took this very nice roller to get my Shiloh from me. I had waited for so long to buy it that it almost became one of the kids. But ... darn thing was just plain painful, so it sat in the closet and that is no place for a rifle like it is.

That is a beautiful piece of wood! That grain pattern is something I have looked for just about forever but with no luck, oh it can be found alright and there's lot's of it on E-bay but the prices might cause heart failure!

Thanks all. She handles very well also. Can not wait to take it to the range for a proper howdy do.

Also, the leather butt pad has seen service on a few rifles ... including the Shiloh 120. No scuffing on any rifle stock so far.

This wood is seemingly pretty tough ... finish wise.

Think I will load some 340's over some Trail Boss. Maybe try some .457 round balls tumble lubed and over Trail Boss also. I really like Trail Boss and purchased 8 pounds some years back. Probably should buy another 8 pounds ... very useful in a wide variety of shells.
