400 whelen

i have a sporterized 98 mauser in 8x57 and next year i'm either going to rebore or rebarrel to the 400 whelen. (read https://web.archive.org/web/20101203...pace_myth.htm# to headspace it). i was going to do the 375 whelen but i already have a 9.3x57(.366"). and i can say that 4-something something!

since 150 lbs whitetails will be its main course, i'll only go 1600-1800fps in 350-400gr fn gc. i hunt in close cover, so 60+ yards is a loooong shot, 25-35 yards is more likely.

i've been thinking of taking it to JES(i like that peep sight) but i might rebarrel it to 24"(it has a 22" barrel). i doubt that extra 2" is a make or break situation, but i like the 24" over the 22". the 98 mauser NEEDS a timney trigger and i'll go with richard's stock( http://rifle-stocks.com/ ), it will be a wolverine style and either a blue coral or black walnut stock.

i doubt highly that i'll get the chance to hunt elk or moose, but my sons' might and i'll just happen to have a rifle that they can use....it sounds good, don't it!!!

I like the looks of your Mauser as-is. If I wanted more oomph, I would have it re-chambered to 8mm-06 and I'd be happy all day.

The 8x57 mm is a great thumper on 150 pound deer (and larger game too). Try it with a 200 gr, 10-12 BHN flat nosed bullet at around 1600 fps, and I think you'll be impressed.

I have a 8mm-06 bought about 20 years ago , fn mauser sporter stock and rechambered everything else is as issued , and a 338-06 done by jes and I had him do a 375-06 (375 whelen ) , the 375 was on a 1903 , you call him he will tell you what he will do I asked for the one to be a 8mm-06 as I had the dies and he said he did not do 8mm so it went to become 338-06 , nice work and fast to , nice person to talk to I dropped them off and picked them up .

I think if you want the 400 whelen then have at it .

unfortunately, the rifling seems to be worn out about 3-4" from the muzzle. i just gave her the once thru with oil, i still have to clean the bore.

A 9.3 is a good one ! Pretty much do all any of us would need in our fare country. Round ball for bunnies and tree rats and 300 grainers for nasty biting critters.
Make a 40 Whelen.. If you do not like it I will buy it. We have a 375 Whelen and use round ball up to a 345 GC flat nose for anything that needs to get ventilated.

Absolutely do it. Cast .41 mag bullet use would be a huge bonus. Even a 10.2x57mm to use the Mauser case.

I would go with the .400 Brown-Whelen or .411 Hawk. There is a little more shoulder for it to head space on.
